June 13, 2022 Academic says more investment needed to address NZ’s concerningly high skin cancer rates - Seb Rice-Walsh - Radio One 91FM
Recent studies have shown that Australia and New Zealand have the highest incidence of Melanoma in the world. Every year in New Zealand 4000 people are diagnosed with melanoma, and more than 350 people die.
Although the two countries share similar rates of skin cancer, a recent study in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health has suggested that NZ lags behind Australia in virtually every dimension of skin cancer prevention including Government investment and supportive legislation.
R1 News spoke to Dr Bronwen McNoe, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University of Otago, who has been a public health researcher for over 30 years with a focus on skin cancer prevention.

June 13, 2022 National Party online gang policy unlikely to be effective - Internet NZ CEO - Seb Rice-Walsh - Radio One 91FM
As part of the National Party’s proposed gang crackdown, party leader Chris Luxon has announced a policy that would ban gang insignia from publicly-accessible social media platforms, alongside all public spaces, if National comes into power next year. He said gangs were increasingly using social media platforms like Tik Tok and Instagram to market themselves and recruit young people, adding that he planned to target gangs online the same way violent extremists have been targeted and censored.
R1 News spoke to Internet NZ interim CEO Andrew Cushen, who says gangs cannot be policed in the same way as extremist material is.
