Sunday 5th of June was World Environment Day, an annual event led by the United Nations Environment programme to raise global awareness about the climate crisis and encourage positive environmental actions towards a more sustainable future. As part of this The Heat Is On - a collection of 20 songs, poems and short stories from young authors in 20 UNESCO cities of literature around the world on the climate crisis - was released. A new Protected Disclosures Act will come into force next month replacing the current whistleblowing laws, aiming to strengthen safeguards for employees that speak out against their employers' wrongdoing.

In mid-late April, the Rotorua Council lodged their Representation Arrangements Bill in Parliament to circumvent the Electoral Act of 2001. The Rotorua Council wanted to change the composition of council in a way that doesn’t just reflect its population demographics, and in turn, the bill attracted criticism from Attorney General David Parker, which resulted in Labour pulling its support for the bill. Conversely, the Council paused the bill and are in the process of refining the legislation. Radio One spoke to University of Otago Politics Professor Janine Hayward about why co-governance models often recieve so much backlash and the importance of Māori representation in local government.

As of the end of May, 78.5% of prisoners in Aotearoa have received their first COVID-19 vaccine. 73.1% are double vaccinated, and 48.3% are boosted. This means over 21% of prisoners have not received a single dose of the Covid-19 Vaccine.

We spoke with Michael Baker, Professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington, about the process of vaccinating prisoners, the presence of Covid-19 in correctional facilities, and the importance of protecting those in prisons.
