A recent study has found bull kelp travel patterns to be larger than once thought, altering scientific understanding of oceanic biosystems. Genomic analysis carried out over decades and on kelp found on the shores of Antarctica, New Zealand and Australia shows some kelp found on southeastern New Zealand beaches had come all the way from South Georgia and Marion Island. The implications of this study could change how we think about oceanic biosystems. We spoke to lead researcher Associate Professor Ceridwen Fraser (Department of Marine Science, University of Otago) about these new findings.

He Waka Eke Noa, the Primary Sector Climate Action Partnership, has recently released its proposals to reduce agricultural emissions in Aotearoa controversial amongst both environmentalists and the agricultural sector. It recommends a farm-level split-gas levy with built-in incentives to reduce emissions and sequester carbon, starting from 2025, as an alternative to the Emissions Trading Scheme. We spoke to Professor Craig Bunt about the implications and context of the new proposal.
