Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) refers to a group of conditions that individuals whose mother’s drunk alcohol during their pregnancy are born with. There is no cure for FASD so effects such as intellectual disabilities, behavioral problems and even heart defects will last a lifetime.

We spoke with Professor Anita Gibbs from the Department of Social and Community work here at Otago University about the prevalence of those with neuro-disabilities such as FASD in the criminal justice system, the challenges people with these disabilities face and what can be done to address this problem.

A newly leaked supreme court draft opinion shows that a majority of supreme court justices are in favour of overturning Roe v Wade. From this revelation, the US has entered a state of political turmoil, with protests springing up across the country and Pres. Biden warning other constitutional rights may be at risk. Gender studies lecturer Rebecca Stringer and Emma Shepherd from the Abortion Law Reform Association of NZ say this will have a profound effect on abortion access in the US and that anti-choice movements will be emboldened both internationally and domestically.

Today on Business as Usual with Trent Smith (Department of Economics, University of Otago) we talked about the change to the governments debt ceiling with the new budget announcement on May 19th.

During the Pre-budget speech on Tuesday, finance Minister Grant Robertson announced a new debt ceiling for Aoteroa at 30% of GDP. The Treasury will now measure New Zealand's net debt by taking into account a wider range of Crown assets like the NZ Super Fund, making our statistics more comparable to other countries. Trent Smith discussed the intricacies of Debt in New Zealand and overseas, as well as the development of policies in this area.
