It’s just flat out wrong to focus on scientific research productivity. Your goal is to simply just put in the work, and ignore scientific research productivity. If we train future scientist just to focus on the numbers, there is no incentive for them to do good work.
In my view scientific research productivity is a banal construct, and there is no, or minimal, direct relationship between action and outcomes in scientific research.
Instead, we need to encourage people to just put in the work regardless of the outcome they receive. We need to encourage people to be good people, and remember why they actually got into science in the first place. You become a scientist because you were a curious kid not because you want to get one more publication.
