  • Why Being a High Performer Made Me Miserable: Balancing Conflicting Identities

I once believed that focusing solely on performance and efficiency was the key to success.

This relentless pursuit led me to a frazzled career and a life that felt empty.

Despite achieving short-term productivity, I was burning out and becoming someone I didn't recognize.

I needed to address the conflicting identities and objectives within me.

    Am I a good husband?

    Am I a great scholar?

    Am I a great leader?

By learning to deal with these aspects (not balance), I found a more fulfilling path that aligned with who I truly am.

But, it requires me to push back against the world.

  • The Privilege of Today: Reflecting on Our Extraordinary Era

When I take a step back and compare where we are today to 30, 60, or even 90 years ago, it becomes clear that the world has fundamentally transformed. From technological advancements and medical breakthroughs to social progress and increased connectivity, I realize how privileged we are to be living at this moment in history. In this reflection, I highlight the remarkable changes that have shaped our modern world, emphasizing the unprecedented opportunities and comforts we often take for granted. Today is not just another day—it's a testament to how far we've come and a reminder to appreciate the extraordinary times we live in.

  • Everyone Thinks I'm Wrong, But I Keep Going: Self-Doubt in Science & Innovation

Everyone thinks I'm wrong—my peers and even the experts in my field.

My ideas about R3ciprocity are misguided, and that I'm wasting my time chasing illusions.

    But guess what?

    I keep going.

The logics of science and innovation is about dealing with doubt and a constant external pressure.

When I am being told I'm wrong, it’s a sign that I'm pushing boundaries and challenging outdated thinking.

    R3ciprocity — a platform for non-rejectable research papers is a stupid idea.

    But, what if?

If you've ever been the outlier, the one who doesn't fit the mold, or the person everyone thinks is off-track, you are doing just fine.

    Keep going.

  • Why I'll Never Be a Research Superstar—and I'm Okay with That

I'll NEVER be a Research Superstar—“Oh Well.” Screw that if the career doesn’t reward me being “ME.”

I’m always going to try to give more than I take in research.

That means doing committee work, lots of reviewing, and actually reading the papers.

    This is a mistake.

It will always make me far more behind then if I simply maximize on “producing pubs.”

I should not be in the career.

I don’t especially like writing or reading.

It makes me grumpy and I am slow.

I will always be chronically behind.

    I am a problem.

But, think it’s an important part of who I am.

Oh well, so what if people don’t like me in academia?

I’m far behind, and never will be a research superstar in the profession.

    Screw that.

I will always work towards making it a place where people want to stay, and be around me.

    At all costs.

And, what a mistake it is not to be “productive.”

  • Patience Over Profit: The Real Path to Building Wealth

I've realized that getting rich quick is a long-term game. To me, 15 to 50 years is a short period when it comes to building wealth. By learning to control my impulses during this time—even though it's challenging and sometimes goes against my nature—I've found it's worth the effort. It may not be easy, and genetics might make it harder, but focusing on long-term goals has made all the difference.

  • Accepting What I Can't Change: How I Learned to Move Forward by Changing Myself

I open up about my journey towards acceptance and the powerful lesson of learning to say, "Well, let's move on." I've realized that I often can't change the external environment the way I wish I could—and that's okay. Much of how we process the world revolves around acceptance. By admitting that the world is often imperfect, I've discovered that true progress comes from changing myself, not from asking the world to change around me.

  • The Paradox of Free Markets: Dependence on Regulation and Institutions

The notion of a "free market" suggests an economic system operating without government intervention, where supply and demand solely dictate the flow of goods and services. However, in reality, truly free markets don't exist. There's nothing inherently "free" about them. Markets often involve a complex web of actors, institutions, and regulations that ensure they function in a way that aligns with our idealized perceptions. Governments, regulatory bodies, and financial institutions play significant roles in shaping market dynamics, setting rules, and providing oversight. This discussion delves into the intricate structures that underpin markets, challenging the traditional concept of a free market and highlighting the necessary frameworks that support economic stability and fairness.

  • Embracing Discomfort: Overcoming Fear of Failure in Academia and Innovation

Conquering the fear of failure in academia, research, and innovation often starts with taking small steps that push you just beyond your comfort zone. By consistently practicing tasks that make you feel slightly uncomfortable, you begin to normalize the feeling of uncertainty and realize it's a natural part of the growth process. Over time, this practice not only reduces the anxiety associated with failure but also fosters resilience and adaptability. Embracing these moments of discomfort becomes a catalyst for personal development and paves the way for meaningful breakthroughs in your academic and innovative pursuits.
