Chaos erupted once again at Wits university's main campus yesterday as police fired stun grenades to disperse protesting students. This after a group of students began protesting in front of the campus's Great Hall. The protest action came as lectures resumed at the university following an online poll in which more than 70 percent of students voted for lectures to resume this week. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has called the Hawks investigation "mischief in the real sense" adding that it was not doing the country any favours. Speaking to SABCNews in New York ahead of the South Africa Tomorrow Investor Conference, he said that everyone concerning the Hawks SARS investigation, knows there's nothing to investigate and the sooner it's put to bed, the better for the country. The Finance Minister is leading a high powered government, labour and business delegation to the conference, now in its fourth year and driven by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, that has seen overwhelming interest from American investors who have oversubscribed for the event. There has been no progress at the controversial Rustenburg Local Municipality in North-West to resolve the stand-off between the ruling ANC and opposition parties. Following the day-long debates yesterday, on the legitimacy of several executive positions, the discussions where thrown into turmoil when the ANC Mayor, Chief Whip and Speaker decided to resign. University student leaders who attended the Multi Stakeholder Forum on Universities hosted by the Higher Education Department refused to adopt the event's declaration. Stakeholders which included government, the students, parents, university management and civil society were engaged in dialogue on the current funding crisis faced by poor university students in South Africa. The ANC has vowed to halt the electoral decline, reclaim lost ground and restore the trust and confidence of the people by rooting out corruption within its ranks. This emerged at the end of its three-day National Executive Committee held at the weekend in Pretoria. President Jacob Zuma is meeting with justice crime prevention and security cluster to discuss ongoing violent students protests at several universities in the country. Students at this institution have been protesting for two weeks over the 2017 fee increment, as announced by Higher education minister Blade Nzimande last week. President Zuma instructed the JCPS to deal with the mayhem at tertiary institutions due to due the violent nature of the protests which have already claimed the live of a Wits university staff member. Minister in the presidency Jeff Radebe announced the urgent meeting during a post cabinet media briefing which also communicated some key decision by the executive.
