The Communications Workers' Union says there will be a total shutdown at Telkom as its members down tools today. The union says workers need a cost-of-living inflation linked salary increase. This comes as an illegal strike at Eskom was resolved last week, while petroleum sector workers belonging to union Ceppawu have been on strike since the beginning of the month. The South African Union of Students has threatened to embark on a national strike at various universities from today (monday 15 August). This come after Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, indefinitely postponed the announcement of university fees for next year. A leader of the Pan Africanist Student Movement, Kaizer Festile, accused the minister of using underhanded tactics and warned of a full-scale revolt by students. Newly-re-elected Cape Town Mayor, Patricia de Lille has dismissed criticism that her mayoral committee is gender and racially imbalanced. She was speaking after her inauguration for another five-year term. The DA won the city in last week's local government election with a two-thirds majority. The DA won 154 seats, the ANC 57 and the EFF got seven seats in last week's poll. Former deputy mayor, Ian Neilson and council speaker, Dirk Smit, also retained their positions. The ANC has questioned the formula used to determine seats allocations in the municipal elections. Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has suggested that something is "wrong" with the formula as the party meets for the first time following a bruising election. The National executive committee is meeting until Sunday - after the party's support dropped to fifty four percent nationally. Mantashe says while they look at what went wrong -he has dismissed speculation tha the meeting will discuss President Zuma's future role in the party. The South African Revenue Service has asked the Constitutional Court not to force it to reinstate a racist employee. Jacobus Kruger got into trouble after using the k-word to refer to his supervisor. The Disciplinary Inquiry stopped short of dismissal, ordering a final written warning and counselling. But the then SARS commissioner ignored that ruling and fired Kruger instead. Residents of Marikana in the North West, who have illegally and forcefully occupied state RDP houses are heading to Bloemfontein to file their eviction case with the Supreme Court of Appeal. The Basic Education Department says the delivery of mobile classrooms, furniture and stationery to schools in Vuwani outside Thohoyandou is almost complete.
