An estimated 18 people have been killed or had attempts made on their lives in suspected political killings since the beginning of this year. This is according to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko. He briefed journalists in Parliament on the progress of a task team established to look into suspected political murders, particularly in KZN. In KwaZulu-Natal alone, the task team is investigating 25 cases of violence linked to suspected political killings. Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Siyabonga Cwele plans to take legal action against the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) following a decion by the regulator to auction a wireless broadband spectrum. The Democratic Alliance has written to Minister Cwele to urge him to halt his office's legal action saying the matter has been subjected to politically inspired delays. The auction for the licences is expected to occur in January next year. IEC in the North West, is on high-alert, following the torching of one of its voting stations in Wonderkop in Marikana. The Commission says, it is monitoring all areas, considered to be political hot-spots ahead of next weeks' polls. Make-shifts voting stations, in a form of tents and other alternatives, will be sent to those areas. Protesting residents in Wonderkop, torched a local hall, earmarked to be used as a voting station - saying the local mining giants, Lonmin is deliberately overlooking them, in its employment of workers. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says there would be a logistical nightmare if the local government election system were changed to allow voters to cast their ballots anywhere in the country if they are outside their voting districts on election day. This comes as media workers, police and health workers are required to work on election day, even if it is declared a public holiday. There's been no schooling for about three months in the area as residents protested against a decision to incorporate their area into a new municipality. The South African Union of Students says it is ready to go on a year-long holiday should government fail to introduce free education from next year. In January, a commission of inquiry into the feasibility free higher education was appointed and given eight months to conduct its investigations. The student body says it is not willing to engage in any talks with the commission if it does not promise free education.
