Two people have been confirmed dead and dozens of others arrested in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, following a spate of lootings over the past 24 hours. Two alleged looters were killed in Mamelodi. On Sunday, an ANC member was shot and killed at the Pretoria Events Centre after it was announced that Thoko Didiza had been endorsed as the ANC's preferred mayoral candidate for the capital city. Since then at least 40 people have been arrested in the subsequent violent protests in Atteridgeville, Hammanskraal and other areas around Tshwane. The country will head to the polls in the coming weeks to elect new municipal councillors. More than 200 political parties will be contesting the elections on the third of August. While service delivery remains the main issue that's dominating the election trail, other parties are using other issues to try and win votes. South African Cities are facing massive urbanisation and are still struggling to transform from the Apartheid spatial legacy. But while they've improved their financial reporting and audit findings their revenue is still inadequate for them to deliver infrastructure and services with some facing corruption and an increasing administrative burden. There are renewed calls for law enforcement agencies to increase security as violent protests continue in and around the townships of Tshwane. Although calm seems to have returned to some areas, elsewhere the protests are continuing. The eruption of violent protests followed the announcement by the ANC that Thoko Didiza is the party's preferred mayoral candidate for Tshwane in the upcoming local government elections.
