Municipalities owing Eskom have been advised to pay their debts or have their electricity cut off. This emerged at a meeting in Kimberley between Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown and all Northern Cape district municipalities. As the ANC scrambles to take stock of the implications of yesterday's Constitutional Court judgment on the Nkandla saga, opposition parties are calling for President Jacob Zuma's head. The court found that President Zuma was in breach of his constitutional obligations in his handling of the Public Protector's report that recommended that he pay back the money spent on non-security upgrades at his private Nkandla home. The court also found that the national assembly's actions were inconsistent with its constitutional duty to perform hold the executive to account. The Constitutional Court gave President Zuma , just more than three months to pay back a portion of the money. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says both the President and the National Assembly violated the Constitution in the way they handled the Nkandla matter. Delivering a unanimous judgment on the matter in the Constitutional Court, Mogoeng said the President failed to uphold, defend and protect the Constitution - by not complying with the Public Protector's report on upgrades at his Nkandla home

South Africans should brace themselves for much tougher economic conditions ahead. This is as prices of goods and services continue on the upward trend. Economists say compounding this, is Eskom's electricity tariff hike of 9 point 4 per cent as well as the 30 cents increase in the fuel levy which will both come into effect tomorrow (01/04/16). They say although the rand has improved slightly the price of petrol is likely to go up by almost 86 cents per litre partly as a result of the expected increase in the fuel levy.
