Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande and various stakeholders have agreed to look into a fee increase not higher than the inflation rate of 6% for the 2016 academic year. Nzimande, various representatives of university vice chancellors and student representatives, met in Cape Town yesterday to find solutions to the increase in tertiary education fees. The student union says hundreds of young people will march to the Department of Higher Education in Pretoria to demand free education. Students from Wits University have rejected the agreement that tuition fee increases at tertiary institutions be capped at 6 percent. Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande made the announcement after a meeting with representatives of various universities in Cape Town yesterday. Wits students begun protesting last Wednesday over the proposed tuition increases of 10,5 percent at the institution. All lectures at the university have been suspended until next Monday. Higher Education Minster Blade Nzimande will meet with representatives of various universities in Cape Town today to discuss tuition fee increases. The minister addressed the media in Pretoria yesterday about protests at a number of institutions over the proposed fee increases. Nzimande has appealed to the students to give efforts aimed at resolving their grievances a chance. He also says government is working on sourcing additional student funding.
