The national education department on Friday announced the writing of the Annual National Assessments (ANA) has been postponed to next year. The announcement came after threats from teacher unions to boycott the ANA - a series of tests for learners between grades one and nine to test their numeracy and literacy levels. Thousands of technical and private college students have been affected by a top-level probe which was instituted by the Department of Higher Education and Training after exam papers were leaked to candidates via WhatsApp. The leaked papers fell under Natural Sciences studies, which affected students from the country's technical, vocational, and private colleges. Parents of the children from Roodepoort Primary School, west of Johannesburg, say they want the department to tighten the security at the school. This came out during a meeting which Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, held with them at Matholeville in Roodepoort. The meeting was aimed at addressing the parents' request, to not send their children back to Roodepoort Primary school. The school was closed last month following violent disruptions. It was also alleged that the principal was unfairly appointed. Neliswa Mavundla reports.

The inquest into the death of Anika Smit, a 17 year old who was sexually molested, stabbed and her hands cut off, will start in the Pretoria North Magistrates court today (MONDAY). Smit was found dead in her father's house in Theresapark, Pretoria, in March 2010. She was in grade 11 at Gerrit Maritz High School when she was murdered. Her father made the gruesome discovery. The discovery of fossils of a new species called Homo Naledi at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site near Johannesburg, has received mixed reaction. While some welcomed the discovery, others questioned how this species can be related to human beings. Police Minister, Nathi Nhleko, says police killings are an attack on the state. He was taking part in a debate in the National Assembly on police killings. Nhleko says 60 police officers have been killed so far this year alone. Nearly half of them died while on duty. Last weekend, President Jacob Zuma called for a tactical plan to be implemented urgently, to combat the killing of police officers. On Wednesday, two officers were killed in Dobsonville in Gauteng.
