Presidential guard members loyal to former Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore have detained President Michel Kafando and his cabinet. Kafando was chosen as interim president last October after the ousting of Compaore. The detention of the nation's transitional leader has triggered immediate street protests outside the presidential palace, raising fears of a coup few weeks before the country. The EFF in Parliament says it will make sure that National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete informs Lonmin mine that the Assembly says the mining company is "corrupt to the core". This comes after the EFF successfully presented a motion without notice in the house last week, and without any objection from any political party in the House. Zimbabwe's main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party has claimed that several of its legislators received death threats. The threats sent via SMS came as President Robert Mugabe officially opened the third session of the eighth parliament Tuesday. The bodies of at-least eleven illegal miners are still trapped underground at a disused mine shaft in Benoni on Gauteng's East Rand. It is understood that the bodies of a group of eight miners have been trapped in a shaft for almost three weeks, after they were killed when a generator exploded underground. The bodies of another three miners are also trapped, after they died due to a lack of oxygen last week. Sashin Naidoo reports

The Chamber of Mines is expected to present a draft agreement to three gold mining sector unions next week, at wage talks mediated by the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). These unions, Solidarity, NUM and UASA have in principle agreed to a six per cent increase for artisans and thirty two percent for entry level employees spread over three years. Meanwhile, AMCU says it is disappointed with the Chamber's revised offer and might formally reject the offer next week in a separate bilateral meeting. Frank Nxumalo reports
