Serious concerned have been raised that South Africa's tax laws have not kept pace with the continuously changing technological world and, in particular digitalised avenues of trade, retail and financial transactions. There are many products and services which are traded online, but on which VAT is not paid by multi-national corporations. Parliament will appeal the judgement by the High Court in Cape Town that found section 11 of the Powers Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, invalid. The DA successfully challenged the Act in court. It deals with the removal and arrest of a disruptive MP from the chamber if instructed by the presiding officer to do so. The South African government has again been criticized for arresting suspected illegal immigrants. The Coalition of Movements Against Xenophobia says the raids were a heavy-handed response that have seen families separated and has led to various human rights abuses. In the latest raid, about 400 immigrants were arrested last Friday in an operation at the Central Methodist Church, a well-known shelter for refugees in downtown Johannesburg.
