A police media briefing is under way at the Moroka police station in Soweto this morning following the looting of foreign owned shops in the area. Police say they will continue to maintain visibility in the areas where foreign owned shops have been looted in Soweto. The rampage began on Monday evening after a foreign national shop owner allegedly shot and killed 14-year-old Siphiwe Mahori in Snake Park. A war of words is brewing between the former State Prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach and the Justice and Constitutional Development Minister, Michael Masutha. Breytenbach says the country's criminal justice has become an exploited and compromised entity under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma. Speaking at the Cape Town Press Club today (wednesday 21 January), she says it's affected the National Prosecuting Authority in particular, and the infighting is ongoing. In his reply to Breytenbach's remarks, Justice Minister Michael Masutha expressed anger, saying Breytenbach is the last person who can claim to be a paragon of virtue, given her legacy in the NPA. President Jacob Zuma says constant reports that he is not meeting his Parliamentary obligations are incorrect and grossly misleading. Opposition parties have been calling on Zuma to appear before Parliament to answer questions relating to security upgrades at his Nkandla residents. His question and answer session was disrupted last August when EFF members banged tables demanding him to respond satisfactorily to their questions. Speaking exclusively with the SABC, President Zuma said he is actually waiting on Parliament to tell him when to avail himself to respond to any any issue it wants him address.
