The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that the Reserve Bank can liquidate the assets of VBS Mutual Bank. The bank had made the application last month saying there is no hope of saving the bank following massive looting and fraud amounting to 1.2 billion rand. "The Great Bank Heist" report by advocate Terry Motau also recommended that the bank's operations be wound down. It lists 53 people as having received money from the bank under questionable circumstances. Last week MPs raised questions about why the Reserve Bank was not prepared to put in place a rescue plan for VBS.

Eskom has warned of possible loadshedding due to a constrained power supply system. The power utility says there's insufficient coal supply at its eleven power stations. Eskom says they're currently transporting coal from the Medupi power station in Limpopo to affected power stations in Mpumalanga.

Former president Jacob Zuma wanted Siyabonga Gama appointed as Transnet CEO. Gama was fired by the board last month following allegations that he may have acted unlawfully in the deal involving the purchase of locomotives. This has come out at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry where former Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan has been testifying.

The two suspects facing charges of murdering seven family members in Valkfontein south of Johannesburg last month, will be detained at different facilities after one of them 27-year old Ernest Mabaso alleged that his co-accused 61-year old Fifita Khupe, was threatening him. They pair appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates Court earlier today and their case has been postponed to next Tuesday. Mabaso has also been charged with three counts of rape. Our reporter Gillian Pillay spoke to some neighbours of the deceased.

The Gauteng Education Department is considering suspending the school principal of the Mpontsheng Secondary School in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, following allegations that he gave an answer sheet to learners who were writing the Geography 1 exam paper recently. The alarm was raised by a concerned parents who reported the matter to exam quality body Umalusi. The Department of Basic Education says the principal has been removed as chief invigilator and that the provincial department may suspend him while the probe takes place. The bail application of the two men arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a Vlakfontein family near Lenasia south of Johannesburg has been adjourned to the 20th of this month. Twenty seven-year-old Ernest Mabaso and 61-year-year-old Fifita Khupe appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court. They are facing seven counts of murder in connection with the murder of seven relatives two weeks ago. Mabaso is facing three additional rape charges

Hundreds of ANC members from the North West are attending the High Court in Johannesburg where Mahumapelo is challenging the NEC's decision to disband their PEC. The members want the NEC's decision to be overturned, claiming it was invalid and irrational. Mahumapela was forced to resign as premier after violent protests erupted to show their dissatisfaction with his leadership. Advocate William Mkhari acting on behalf of the ANC

The SABC has distanced itself from a list circulating on social media revealing the names of those who allegedly benefitted from irregular appointments, promotions and salary increases. The organisation is seeking to review the employment contracts that were not enter into legally. This comes as SABC employees embark on lunch-time pickets across the country to protest against the proposed retrenchments. More than 2000 permanent and freelance employees are to lose their jobs if the retrenchments go ahead. SABC COO Chris Maruleng has warned workers that the protest action is not legal.

MyCiti employees who are contracted through labour brokers say conditions under labour brokers are bad for workers. They now want to be employed directly by the City of Cape Town. The workers have been on strike for four weeks now over this demand. Two MyCiti buses were set alight this week, one in Milnerton and another in Khayelitsha. Last month, another bus was stoned and petrol bombed, also in Khayelitsha. Security has since been beefed up on the buses. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to one of the striking workers Patrick Mabindisa.

The Eastern Cape Health Department says it will be taking disciplinary action against the emergency services workers who embarked on an illegal strike since Monday. The workers were protesting over unpaid overtime due to some of them from as far back as 2003. An agreement was reached yesterday, to pay some of the money and to refer other cases to for mediation. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the department’s Lwandile Sicwetsha, who says not taking action against the workers will set a bad precedence.
