Police in the North West are urging parents to monitor their children's movements during the violence-marred protests. Police say children are illegally blocking roads with objects and demanding cash from motorists. About three hundred and fourty people have been arrested after violent protests which were accompanied by looting, broke out last week. North West police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone provided Sakina Kamwendo with more information.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has slammed the Grindrod Bank for distributing what is says are misleading pamphlets which depict the bank's green card as one of SASSA's banking accounts of choice. SASSA says it has not been endorsed the card. The agency has given Grindrod Bank and Net1 five days to retract the pamphlet. SASSA accounts have for the last six years been held at the bank on behalf of Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), which used to pay out all the social grants. Sakina Kamwendo interviewed Nandi Mosia who is SASSA Gauteng Spokesperson.

Trade union involved in the bus strike are meeting today. The nation wide strike is now in its 14th day. Talks between the unions and employers are still deadlocked even after a meeting with the Transport and Labour Department Ministers last week. SATAWU says the ministers did not help them at all. As South Africa celebrates Freedom Day, incidents of racism appear to be on the rise, raising concern about just how far the country has come in eradicating this scourge. This week, a group of white people were photographed hanging a life-size doll dressed in an ANC T-shirt and a picture of Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, on a tree outside the offices of the Basic Education Department in Pretoria. And last month, the Randburg Magistrate's Court sentenced former Real Estate Agent, Vicki Momberg, to an effective two years in prison for her racist tirade in 2016. Abongile Dumako takes a look at the extent to which racism remains prevalent in South Africa.

Freedom Day was marked a day early in New York City with South African diplomats expressing their appreciation for the support the international community played in defeating Apartheid and for their continued support during the last 24 years of democracy. Around 200 people gathered to mark the day under the theme "The year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: towards the full realization of our freedom through radical socio-economic transformation". Sherwin Bryce-Pease was there.

A first ever Land summit has called for people to take up arms to return the land to its rightful owners. The summit held in Johannesburg was hosted by organisations claiming to represent Khoi-San people. Those in attendance included Professor Ruth Hall, Kallie Kriel from Afriforum and Andile Mngxitama of the Black First Land First movement. Candice Nolan has the details on that.

At least seven people have died in a collision between a train and a bakkie early this morning at the Buttskop level crossing, outside Cape Town. Metrorail has blamed the crash in Blackheath on human error, saying the bakkie driver ignored boom signals. Residents have called for urgent interventions at the crossing, following numerous deaths there. Berenice Moss reports.

The IAAF maintains that its new regulation for female classification is to ensure a level playing field for athletes. The new law prohibits athletes with a set testosterone level from competing in international events. The federation says research shows that high testosterone circulation, either naturally produced or artificially inserted into the body provides significant performance advantages in female athletes. The new regulation, approved by the IAAF council will take effect from November.

The North West Health Department has been placed under administration. Cabinet has announced that a team from Treasury and the National Health Department will be sent to the province to assist as the state of the department deteriorates with poor service delivery issues being worsened by the current workers' strike.

ICASA says from now on consumers will no longer be billed out of data bundle rates. It also says consumers will be allowed to carry over their data to the next month. Data will no longer expire and be forfeited if not used up at the end of 30 days.
This as high cost of data & expiry of data bundles and out-of-bundle business rules applied by network service providers is on the spotlight today.
