Consumers will face rising costs following a decision by government to introduce an increase in VAT and a hike in fuel levy from April. Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba announced an increase in VAT from 14 percent to 15 percent from the 1st of April. He says new tax measures to increase VAT and personal income tax will raise an additional 36 billion rand in 2018/19. Government will also introduce spending cuts amounting to 85 billion rand through re-allocations. Tshepo Mongoai reports.

Political parties in Parliament expect Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba to strike a delicate balancing act between government's spending priorities and the burgeoning budget deficit. Gigaba is expected to table the budget speech in parliament at 2 o'clock on Wednesday. Police in the Eastern Cape have confirmed that at least 6 police officers have been killed after gunmen attacked the police station in the small town of Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape. Police say the alleged attackers came into the police station after 11 pm last night and locked some of the officers in a room.
