The Life Esidimeni hearings will resume tomorrow following former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu's first appearance yesterday. Mahlangu told the hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg that the decision to terminate the contract with Life Esidimeni was not hers alone, but that of a collective. She said it was a cost cutting measure and also in response to the Auditor-General's concerns that the contract did not follow normal tender processes. Mahlangu however admitted that things went wrong and apologised to the families of the 143 psychiatric patients who lost their lives.

Security is expected to be tight ahead of the much-anticipated appearance of former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu at the Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg. Mahlangu is expected to be grilled over the department's decision to aburptly end the contract it had with Life Esidimeni for about 36 years, and take mentally-ill patients to NGOs who had neither the capacity nor the expertise to care for them. The North West government has applied to the Presidency for an official provincial funeral for former Bophuthatswana homeland leader, Lucas Mangope.
