Illegal miners have caused about 800-million rand in damage to the sewerage network in the cash-strapped Matjhabeng Municipality in Welkom in the Free State. Mayor Nkosinjani Speelman says the illegal miners - known as Zama Zamas - use sewage water to separate gold from gold-bearing rocks. In order to get the water, they are destroying the sewerage system in Thabong. The community has also been living in fear as Zama Zamas have been engaging in gun battles in their quest for the most gold. Maryna van Wyk reports....

The State in the Henri van Breda axe murder case has submitted to the High Court in Cape Town that Van Breda be found guilty as charged. Susan Galloway argued that circumstantial evidence is so overwhelming that Van Breda is the one who attacked and killed his mother, father, brother and attempted to kill his sister at their Stellenbosch home in 2015. Opposition parties want the motion of no confidence in president Jacob Zuma brought forward or they will go to court. The parties also want parliament to be dissolved and a new election called. The ANC will hold a media briefing at twelve noon, at which it's expected to formally announce the decisions taken by its NEC on President Jacob Zuma's future. The briefing follows the marathon meeting held by the party's National Executive committee in Irene outside Pretoria last night, where the NEC decided to call for a motion of no confidence in the president. Party president Cyril Ramaphosa and Secretary General Ace Magashule were sent to Zuma's official residence to ask him to step down. Some reports have said he asked for a further three months in office.

National Police Commissioner, General Kehla Sitole, says pronouncement on the imminent arrest of IPID Head, Robbert McBride are premature, as investigations against him are still underway. Sithole says they are aware of reports that McBride will be arrested this week. He says police are pushing concocted charges against McBride, this to protect former acting National Police Commissioner, Kgomotso Phahlane who last week was charged with corruption.
