Labour Movement COSATU says the magnitude caused by the biggest corporate scandal involving Steinhoff International will have a serious impact on the clothing and textile workers in South Africa. And the South African Federation of Union SAFTU says it feels vindicated as it has proven that the controversial Gupta family and their alleged questionable dealing are not the only source of problem caused by capitalism in the country. This comes as more than 13 billion US dollars were wiped off when Steinhoff shares lost over 80 percent of their value.

Wage negotiations between the SABC and its unions are expected to commence today. This follows the offer of four-point-five percent salary increase made by the public broadcaster to its staff. The South African Post Office (Sapo) will now be the new distributor of social grants. This follows an agreement between the Post Office and SASSA announced by the Minister in the Presidency, responsible for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe. This follows the order by the constitutional court that SASSA and the Social Development Department must find an alternative service provider to Cash Paymaster Services (CPS). SAPO and SASSA will now work together to ensure that 17 million social grants recipients receive their grants from April next year.

Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister, Siyabonga Cwele, has moved to reassure social grants beneficiaries that the transition from CPS to the South African Post Office will be smooth. Yesterday, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on social grants announced that SASSA and the Post Office had signed an agreement which would see the Post Office taking over the grants distribution from April the first. In March the Constitutional Court ordered SASSA and the Social Development Department to find a new service provider to replace CPS. Minister Cwele says grants beneficiaries will benefit financially with the new payment system...

There has been widespread condemnation from various business sectors and unions in the wake of international retailer Steinhoff revelations of accounting irregularities. Many business groups are calling for business organisations to distance themselves from corrupt companies. Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) says it is disappointed and disgruntled by Steinhoff's recent allegations. It says this makes big business look bad. It is calling on businesses to adhere to the codes of good corporate governance and ethics. Amina Accram reports

The ANC is proposing to establish what it calls an Electoral Revolutionary Council, to better screen it's members who want to occupy top leadership roles. This is contained in the ruling party's policy documents on organisational renewal, which will further be discussed at the National Conference in Nasrec next week.
