The United Nations Children's Agency, UNICEF, approximates that 48,000 babies will be born in the Eastern and Southern Africa region today, on New Year's Day, but estimates that close to 3000 children around the world will die within the first 24 hours. UNICEF says it's New Year resolution is to help give every child more than an hour, more than a day, more than a month - of survival.. Hundreds of families in Gauteng have been affected after a storm ripped through parts of the province at the weekend. Two people died and dozens of homes and shacks were damaged - mainly in Johannesburg and on the West Rand. Part of Leratong Hospital on the West Rand was also damaged. The Gauteng government has erected tents in the worst-affected areas. Meanwhile relief organisation Gift of the Givers are on the ground assisting affected families. Police in Johannesburg were on high alert last night in various hotspots around the city as revellers were out and about celebrating the New Year. Every new year's eve places like Hilbrow and Berea become hotspots for disorderly behaviour while several townships are hotbeds for the abuse and misuse of fireworks. Shocking details of badly decomposed bodies and corpses with missing body parts were revealed at the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg. The often emotionally-charged hearings which started in October also heard how unlicensed and ill-equipped NGOs, with no experience in caring for psychiatric patients were forced to take more patients than they could care for. And how procedures were flouted during the transfers that resulted in deaths of 143 patients. The hearings seek to provide closure and redress for families of mentally ill-patients who were affected when about one-thousand-700 of them were moved to NGOs across Gauteng. The Constitutional Court is expected to deliver a ruling on whether Parliament should initiate impeachment proceedings against President Jacob Zuma over upgrades to his private home in Nkandla that were found to be unconstitutional.
