Suspended head of the Gauteng Health Department, Dr Barney Selebano, has given contradicting answers on whether Premier David Makhura knew about the transfer of patients to NGOs. Selebano also said he will not resign over the bungled Esidimeni relocations, which resulted in the deaths of 143 mentally ill-patients. He maintaines that the decision to terminate the Life Esidimeni contract was a cost-cutting measure. But, he regrets not listening to warnings against the move. Wisani Makhubele reports..

Former Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane is being implicated in allegedly fabricating a case against IPID Boss, Robert McBride. This follows a raid by Police watchdog, Independent Police Investigative Directorate - IPID - at Phalane's properties and those of his alleged accomplices. At least two companies have admitted to the practice of strip searching while the labour department has also found that workers in these factories are exploited and under paid. Suspended head of the Gauteng Health Department Dr Barney Selebano has told the Life Esidimeni hearings in Johannesburg that he was scared to stand up to then MEC Qedani Mahlangu. Selebano says he agreed with Chief Director Molefi Mosenogi that the move could have dire consequences if carrid out hurriedly. Mosenogi led the project to transfer the mentally-ill patients to ill-eqqipped and unlicensed NGOs. Before patients were moved, Mosenogi wrote a letter the then MEC requesting a minimum of six months' extension for the project, saying it could not be carried out in three months. Road Traffic Management Cooperation CEO, Advocate Makhosini Msibi has committed to ensuring that law enforcement officers work throughout the night in order to tackle transgressions on the road that occur after sunset. Msibi together with transport minister, Joe Maswanganyi yesterday launched the holiday road safety campaign in Limpopo where the N1 has experienced a high number of accidents. In Gauteng, more than forty people have died on the roads since the start of December alone and many of those killed were pedestrians who were struck by cars.

The City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille wants Capetonians to pay a drought charge. This, she says, is to ensure that there is sufficient money available to spend on emergency water augmentation projects, when the need arise.
