The Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, found that the Eastern Cape provincial government improperly redirected about 300 million rand of public funds to pay for the funeral of former president Nelson Mandela. She found that some of the funds were meant for the provision of running water, electricity sanitation, ablution facilities, replacement of mud-schools and refurbishing hospitals. Suspended head of the Gauteng Health Department Dr Barney Selebano is expected to make his much-anticipated appearance at the Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg today. This comes after the High Court in Johannesburg yesterday dismissed with costs his urgent application to set aside a subpoena ordering him to give evidence at the hearings. He then launched an urgent application for leave to appeal the judgment. It was also dismissed with costs. Selebano is expected to face questions over his role on relocations of mentally ill patients to unlicencsed and ill-equipped NGOs, in which 143 of them subsequently died. Political analyst Elvis Masoga says ANC nomination processes at branch general meetings in Limpopo have given an early indication that the province will support Cyril Ramaphosa for the party's presidency. The ANC is expected to hold its provincial general council in Limpopo today(Monday). The ANC in Gauteng has nominated Cyril Ramaphosa as its preferred candidate to lead the ruling party. Ramaphosa garnered 374 votes. The position of Deputy President went to Lindiwe Sisulu with 182 votes. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma garnered 64 of the votes for the position of president. Over 400 delegates from six regions in Gauteng convened at the Provincial General Council in Irene, Pretoria, to nominate their presidential candidates and to discuss policy ahead of the party's National Elective Conference later this month.
