Labour unions BEMAWU and CWU have vowed to forge ahead with their strike at the SABC on Thursday. Both unions have rejected the SABC's 4-point 5 per cent salary increase, backdated to October this year. The increase would be paid next year. CWU says the salary increase should instead be back dated by nine months. BEMAWU on the other hand wants a 10% salary increase across the board. BEMAWU president Hannes du Buisson says they are prepared to call off the strike if the SABC tables an improved offer. We speak to the SABC Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago.

Two female students have been banned from Rhodes University for life and may never complete their studies. This after they participated in an anti-rape protest at the institution in Grahamstown in April last year. Last month the Univerisity found the female students guilty of kidnapping, assault, defamation and insubordination after four male students were dragged out of their dorm rooms, spat on, assaulted with empty water bottles and tauted. The male students had been fingered as alleged rapists at the university. Senior Reporter Candice Nolan reports....

This comes as more than 13 billion US dollars were wiped off when Steinhoff shares lost over 80 percent of their value.

Wage negotiations between the SABC and its unions are expected to commence today. This follows the offer of four-point-five percent salary increase made by the public broadcaster to its staff. The South African Post Office (Sapo) will now be the new distributor of social grants. This follows an agreement between the Post Office and SASSA announced by the Minister in the Presidency, responsible for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe. This follows the order by the constitutional court that SASSA and the Social Development Department must find an alternative service provider to Cash Paymaster Services (CPS). SAPO and SASSA will now work together to ensure that 17 million social grants recipients receive their grants from April next year.

Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister, Siyabonga Cwele, has moved to reassure social grants beneficiaries that the transition from CPS to the South African Post Office will be smooth. Yesterday, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on social grants announced that SASSA and the Post Office had signed an agreement which would see the Post Office taking over the grants distribution from April the first. In March the Constitutional Court ordered SASSA and the Social Development Department to find a new service provider to replace CPS. Minister Cwele says grants beneficiaries will benefit financially with the new payment system...
