African Union Chairperson, Mousa Mahamat, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in South Sudan citing "unspeakable suffering" on civilians in Africa's youngest nation. In a speech read on his behalf during celebrations to mark Africa day in Nairobi, Mahamat called on leaders from both sides of the conflict to stop the killings and establish inclusive dialogue. South Sudan has witnessed renewed fighting despite a peace agreement signed in August 2015. At least one million people have fled the country and another 2 million are living in camps for displaced persons. The United Nations declared a famine in some parts of the war weary country. A group of academics investigating reports of state capture believes a 'silent coup' has taken place in South Africa. The group, consisting of academics from various institutions of higher learning released a 72-page report yesterday at the Wits School of Governnance in Johannesburg. The report says that a power elite centred around President Jacob Zuma has managed to build a symbiotic relationship between the constitutional state and what it calls a shadow state to execute this coup. Parliament has heard how the Knysna Municipality in the Western Cape has been plagued by corruption, maladministration and tender irregularities. This was revealed by a Knysna resident and activist, Mike Hampton, who petitioned the NCOP's Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings in Parliament.
