The number of bodies of illegal miners retrieved from the Eland Mine Shaft in Welkom in the Free State has increased to 25 from the 24 reported yesterday. Nine surviving illegal miners - known as Zama-Zamas - have also been arrested. Police says a 25th body was found yesterday and more bodies still remain underground. Thabiso Radebe filed this report

The Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane says she is shocked by the return of Brian Molefe as Eskom CEO. Molefe announced his departure from Eskom in November last year, citing the interests of good corporate governance as one of the reasons. The gloves are off in the long-simmering battle between acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Robert MCBride. Phahlane has accused IPID of being captured and of targeting him illegally. On the other hand, IPID claims that Phahlane is abusing state resources to launch counter-investigations against its investigators who are probing his alleged involvement in tender and other irregularities. The police watchdog body has accused Phahlane of deploying a senior police team to obstruct its investigation into him. IPID head Robert Mcbride and Phahlane, accompanied by fellow officers, yesterday appeared before Parliament's Police Committee together for the first time. The City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee says Level Four water restrictions could be implemented next month once they are approved by council. Eskom board chairperson, Ben Ngubane, has described as preposterous former Mining minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi's allegations that Eskom CEO Brian Molefe and Ngubane pressed him to blackmail Glencore. Ngubane was speaking on the sidelines of the 17th annual African Utility Week conference in Cape Town. Ramatlhodi claims he was fired for not complying. A University of Witwatersrand student who was abducted on her way to campus has been found in Ga-Rankuwa. The 22 year old was allegedly forced into a vehicle by unknown suspects who were following her on the Nelson Mandela Bridge into Braamfrontein. The kidnapping victim was then drugged and assaulted by the suspects. But the woman made a brave escape when her captors' made a stop around Ga-Rankuwa. The Democratic Alliance's Member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, Mbali Ntuli will face charges related to her social media comments. This despite the DA's Federal Legal Commission finding that there was no case to be made against Ntuli. The charges came after Ntuli liked a comment on Facebook that called the Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille a racist.
