A lo largo de todo el libro, esta frase —“Fue la última vez que lo vi”— va marcando la muerte de los personajes que vamos conociendo a través del relato de Rafael, con la emocionante narración de Giacomo.

Era principios de 1981. Álvaro, aún en recuperación luego de una serie de enfermedades, es enviado a Cuba al frente de un grupo de compañeros y compañeras con la misión de capacitarse en radiocomunicaciones militares.

Para realizar este viaje, Álvaro —ahora como Rafael— irá a la finca de la familia, donde se encuentra su hermano Jorge Alberto, y le pedirá ayuda para que lo saque a Honduras, a él y a otros tres compañeros. Aquella ocasión fue la última vez que vio a su hermano.

Throughout the book, the phrase “It was the last time I saw him” signals the death of the characters we come to know through Rafael’s account, brought to life by Giacomo’s moving narration.

It was early 1981. Álvaro, still recovering from a series of illnesses, was sent to Cuba to lead a group of comrades on a mission to receive training in military radio communications.

To make this journey, Álvaro —now going by Rafael— traveled to the family’s estate, where his brother Jorge Alberto was staying. He asked him for help to get himself and three other comrades out to Honduras. That moment was the last time he saw his brother.

Álvaro se incorporó a las labores de la nueva casa, donde se fabricaban minas Claymore para las emboscadas guerrilleras. Tras semanas de recuperación y arduo trabajo, apareció el Comandante Rapeil, a quien Álvaro no conocía personalmente, aunque ya había oído hablar de él.

Rapeil les informó que la organización planeaba llevar a cabo acciones comando, y que ellos serían los primeros en ejecutarlas. Formarían parejas para realizar operaciones en el oriente del país, con el objetivo de aliviar la presión sobre los frentes guerrilleros del altiplano occidental. Rapeil les dejó claro que lo que esperaba de ellos era un “absoluto desprecio por la muerte”.

El Comandante en Jefe Gaspar ordenó el traslado de Álvaro a Cuba para su formación como Radista Militar. Encabezaría un grupo de otros cinco compañeros. Para iniciar el viaje, regresaría a la finca San Luis, donde pediría a su hermano que lo ayudara a cruzar a Honduras, acompañado por tres camaradas.

Álvaro joined the work at the new house, where Claymore mines were being manufactured for guerrilla ambushes. After weeks of recovery and intense labor, Commander Rapeil appeared—a man Álvaro hadn’t met, though he had heard of him.

Rapeil informed them that the organization was planning commando operations, and that they would be the first to carry them out. They would be paired off to execute missions in the eastern part of the country, aiming to relieve pressure on the guerrilla fronts in the western highlands. Rapeil made it unmistakably clear: what he expected from them was “absolute contempt for death.”

Commander-in-Chief Gaspar then ordered Álvaro’s transfer to Cuba for training as a Military Radio Operator. He would lead a group of five other comrades. To begin the journey, he would return to the San Luis farm, where he would ask his brother to help him cross into Honduras, accompanied by three fellow fighters.

Álvaro y Enrique llegaron a un motel de paso, donde Álvaro pudo constatar que estaba literalmente en los huesos. Al día siguiente, arribaron a la ciudad, y Enrique lo entregó a otro compañero, Abimael, con quien se dirigieron a una Casa de Seguridad.

A la mañana siguiente, llegó la hermana de Álvaro, lo que fue una gran alegría y marcó el inicio de una batería de exámenes y tratamientos para combatir la hepatitis, la desnutrición, los parásitos intestinales y otras dolencias. Lo trasladaron a otra casa, donde conoció a Julieta, con quien inició una relación amorosa. La situación familiar había cambiado radicalmente: el Ejército Secreto Anticomunista había enviado cartas de amenaza a sus padres, y su hermana se vio obligada a pasar a la clandestinidad.

Tras unas pocas semanas, Álvaro fue trasladado nuevamente a otra Casa de Seguridad.

Álvaro and Enrique arrived at a roadside motel, where Álvaro realized he was literally skin and bones. The next day, they reached the city, and Enrique handed Álvaro over to another comrade, Abimael, with whom he went to a Safe House.

The following morning, Álvaro’s sister arrived, bringing great joy and marking the beginning of a series of medical exams and treatments to combat hepatitis, malnutrition, intestinal parasites, and other ailments. During the rounds of clinics and laboratories, Álvaro contracted measles, which slowed down his recovery.

Once he regained some weight, Álvaro had the chance to visit his parents and travel to his grandparents’ beloved farm.

Soon after, Álvaro was sent back to the Front and reunited with Commander Everardo. Just a few days later, Álvaro was forced to return to the city due to a severe amoeba infestation.

He was moved to another house, where he met Julieta, and they began a romantic relationship. The family’s situation had changed drastically: the Secret Anti-Communist Army had sent threatening letters to Álvaro’s parents, and his sister had been forced to go underground.

After a few weeks, Álvaro was once again transferred to another Safe House.

Se decidió que el Frente se movilizaría hacia la zona de operaciones cercana al Lago de Atitlán. Con la muerte de Javier, varios combatientes pidieron su baja. Con la tropa diezmada y la moral combativa por los suelos, a Álvaro le diagnostican hepatitis. Luego de 15 días de marchas extenuantes, se hace evidente la necesidad de sacar a Álvaro hacia la ciudad para su recuperación.  

Luego de tres días de dura y peligrosa marcha, Álvaro y Julito finalmente llegan a la casa de la abuelita, donde un vehículo del Frente Urbano se lleva a Álvaro hacia la ciudad.

It was decided that the Front would move toward the operational area near Lake Atitlán. After Javier’s death, several fighters requested to withdraw. With the troops depleted and combat morale at rock bottom, Álvaro was diagnosed with hepatitis. After fifteen days of exhausting marches, it became clear that he needed to be taken to the city to recover.

After three days of a tough and dangerous journey, Álvaro and Julito finally arrived at Grandma’s house, where a vehicle from the Urban Front transported Álvaro to the city.

Se vivía una situación preinsurreccional, y la respuesta del Ejército fue la implementación de lo que se conoció como la Política de Tierra Arrasada. Entre 1980 y 1984, el Ejército cometió un genocidio contra el pueblo indígena: más de 400 aldeas y caseríos desaparecieron, y se calcula que hubo más de 200 mil muertos y 45 mil desaparecidos.

El 20 de julio de 1980, el comandante Javier cayó en manos del Ejército, y los periódicos y radioperiódicos del día siguiente daban cuenta de su ejecución, dejando al Frente Dos sin comandante, bajo el mando de los entonces capitanes Everardo y Pancho.

The year was 1980. The growth of guerrilla organizations, the rise of ORPA, and the wave of popular mobilizations took the Guatemalan Army and oligarchy by surprise. A pre-insurrectional situation was underway, and the Army’s response was the implementation of what became known as the Scorched Earth Policy. Between 1980 and 1984, the Army carried out genocide against the indigenous population: more than 400 villages and settlements were wiped out, and estimates suggest over 200,000 people were killed and 45,000 disappeared.

On July 20, 1980, Commander Javier was captured by the Army, and the newspapers and radio broadcasts the following day reported his execution, leaving Front Two without a commander, now under the leadership of then-Captains Everardo and Pancho.

En este capítulo conoceremos al comandante Everardo. Junto a él, Álvaro llevará a cabo varias acciones político-militares, entre ellas “La emboscada de los trapos”, una operación fallida que pondrá a prueba sus capacidades. Nuevos compañeros y compañeras se incorporan al Frente, y la narración de Buonafina, como siempre, nos transporta por esos senderos guerrilleros y la vida cotidiana del Frente Guerrillero.

El diálogo entre Giacomo y Rafael revela intimidades que el sonolibro no cuenta, lo que lo hace especialmente interesante, y nos permite conocerlos a través de sus opiniones y posturas frente al mundo actual.

In this chapter, we meet Commander Everardo. Alongside him, Álvaro carries out several political-military operations, including the failed ambush known as “The Rag Ambush,” which puts them to the test. New comrades join the Front, and Buonafina’s narration once again takes us through guerrilla trails and the daily life of the Guerrilla Front.

The dialogue between Giacomo and Rafael reveals intimate details not included in the audiobook, making it especially engaging and allowing us to get to know them through their views and stances on today’s world.

Estamos a finales del año 1979 en Guatemala. ORPA, la Organización del Pueblo en Armas, acababa de salir a luz pública con acciones político-militares en el Occidente del país. El accionar de las otras organizaciones guerrilleras se intensificó y las organizaciones populares y sindicales protagonizaron manifestaciones multitudinarias.

La respuesta del Ejército fue el inicio de la política de Tierra Arrasada, la matanza de aldeas completas y la ejecución selectiva de dirigentes campesinos, estudiantiles y obreros.

Buonafina interroga a Rosal para que explique más en detalle la vida interna de la guerrilla y provoca la reflexión sobre el pasado y el presente complejo y violento que vivimos actualmente.

La banda sonora nos transporta a esas imponentes montaña.

It’s late 1979 in Guatemala. ORPA, the Revolutionary Organization of the People in Arms, had just made its public debut through political-military actions in the western part of the country. The operations of other guerrilla organizations intensified, and popular and labor movements led massive demonstrations.

The Army responded with the beginning of its scorched-earth policy: the massacre of entire villages and the targeted execution of peasant, student, and worker leaders.

Buonafina questions Rosal in order to delve deeper into the internal life of the guerrilla movement, prompting reflection on both the past and the complex, violent present we live in today.

The soundtrack carries us to those majestic mountains.

“Jule” is a very chapín (Guatemalan) expression used to incite dogs to attack. That same energy fueled the march following the political-military takeover of the Filadelfia Goverment Farm. They had just declared war against a semi-colonial system, inherited from the Encomenderos—Creoles empowered by the Spanish Crown in the 16th century.

Llegó el día de marchar hacia la primera acción político-militar de la ORPA. Era la segunda quincena de septiembre de 1979. Luego de meses de preparación, el pelotón inicial del Frente Dos estaba listo para declararle al sistema racista la “Guerra Popular y Revolucionaria”, también llamada por algunos la “Guerra Justa y Necesaria”.

Su objetivo: tomar militarmente la Finca Nacional Filadelfia, en la Boca Costa del departamento de Suchitepéquez. En su marcha aprenderán a andar ligeros, llevando sólo lo estrictamente indispensable. Se toparán con fantasmas (Xibineles) y también con un coro estudiantil en una escuela en medio de la montaña, cantando el Himno Nacional el día de la llamada Independencia Nacional, 15 de septiembre.

Como concluye Álvaro al final: “Acababan de alborotar el panal.”

Como siempre, la narración e interpretación de Buonafina crea un ambiente íntimo de recordación y viaje a otro tiempo/espacio, apoyado por una banda sonora cuidadosamente trabajada.

The day had come to embark on ORPA’s first political-military action. It was the second half of September 1979. After months of preparation, the initial platoon of Front Two was ready to declare “The Popular and Revolutionary War” against the racist system—a war some also called “The Just and Necessary War.”

Their mission: to militarily seize the Filadelfia National Estate in the Boca Costa region of the Suchitepéquez department. On their march, they would learn to travel light, carrying only what was strictly essential. They would encounter ghosts (Xibineles) and also a student choir, singing the National Anthem in a school deep in the mountains on the day of the so-called National Independence, September 15.

As Álvaro concludes at the end: “They had just stirred the hornet’s nest.”

As always, Buonafina’s narration and interpretation creates an intimate atmosphere of remembrance and a journey into another time/space, supported by a carefully crafted soundtrack.

Era septiembre de 1979 cuando llegó la propaganda: sacos llenos de panfletos anunciaban el nacimiento de la Organización del Pueblo en Armas (ORPA). Los días en el campamento El Paraíso estaban contados. Tocaba desmontar todo lo construido durante un año de permanencia clandestina. Con cierta tristeza, destruyeron el campo de obstáculos, el polígono y hasta el baño de aguas termales. A pesar de haber enterrado muchas pertenencias, al partir, aquellos guerrilleros parecían caracoles con la casa a cuestas. La marcha se tornó muy lenta, y no les quedó más remedio que detenerse y deshacerse de la mitad del peso.

Como siempre, la narración de Buonafina y la banda sonora nos hacen viajar en el tiempo y el espacio.

Finalmente llegaron a la casa de la familia de Julito, al otro lado de la montaña, en lo que sería el teatro de operaciones de las futuras acciones. Levantaron un campamento provisional, no muy lejos de los cuatro ranchos donde vivían Julito, sus hermanos y sus esposas, junto a unos cinco niños, y los abuelos: el Tat y la Nan. Descansarían unos días antes de internarse en la montaña rumbo a su primer objetivo político-militar.

La víspera de la partida, en un atardecer que anunciaba tormenta, el Tat llevó a Javier y a Álvaro a su lugar sagrado y comenzó a tocar la chirimía. El eco y los truenos presagiaban la guerra que se avecinaba.

It was September 1979 when the propaganda arrived: sacks filled with pamphlets announcing the birth of the People’s Armed Organization (ORPA). The days at El Paraíso camp were numbered—it was time to dismantle everything built during a year of clandestine existence. With a touch of sadness, they tore down the obstacle course, the firing range, and even the thermal spring bath. Though much had been buried in hidden caches, by the time they set off, the guerrilla fighters looked like snails carrying their homes on their backs. The march grew unbearably slow, and they had to stop and discard half the weight they bore.

As always, Buonafina’s narration and the soundtrack carry us across time and place.

Eventually, they reached Julito’s family home on the far side of the mountain, a place that would become the theater of future operations. A provisional camp was set up not far from the four homesteads where Julito lived with his brothers, their wives, about five children, and the elders—Tat and Nan, the grandparents. They would rest a few days before venturing into the mountains toward their first political-military objective.

On the eve of departure, beneath a dusk that hinted at a coming storm, Tat led Javier and Álvaro to his sacred place and began to play the chirimía. The echo and the thunder foretold the war to come.
