Rocking and Rolling In The UK and Popping (sh)It up Everywhere which is about as welcome as a rock in your pop and a turd in your Corporate Sponsored Drink. So I’m getting my revenge by mashing and mixing up pop and rock and everything else and giving it the respect it deserves (i.e, none at all) and trying to show the diversity of mashup culture in this edition.

From cutups to plunderphonics to mashups, white labels and bootlegs, mashcore, sowndclown, crumplebangers, sampladelic collages to bastard pop…it’s all in here somewhere in this Bumper first mashup episode of 2021, usually with a message lurking in the deep fizzy depths. That was the point of my rant after all. I want to hear things in new combinations, not the same old industry sock cooking form, papering over the cracks…

We salute Daft Punk with several tracks, music and mashup heroes extraordinaire (they pretty much invented the modern trend of mashing up all your own tunes up live in 2006/7. Before then usually artists were trying to shine their own turd by adding someone else’s glitter). Really sad to see them walk into the sunset and, err, explode (hence the graphic above). What is more pop than going POP?

Also, we celebrate some boots and reboots, new meets the old. Punk rockers headbanging with the emo goths, metalheads moshing with the pop kids, breakcore gabba fans slamming with the disco queens, drum and bass dub rastas bogling with the candy ravers, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together and mass hysteria!

February is LGBTQ* History month in the UK, and with the recent TV series ‘It’s A Sin’ it seemed time to post this musical podcast series about the last pandemic, the HIV/AIDS ‘plague’. I started this last April during the first lockdown as I could see parallels between what I lived through in the ’80s and ’90s and what is happening now, with some major exceptions.

And no, it is not all doom and gloom – I am looking for positive lessons in how to survive this pandemic and what is to come, and is as much a celebration of the community and those that survived as a memorial to those we lost. So there is music from that era that talked about AIDS or soundtracked films, documentaries and the fight back to get the world to pay attention interspersed with spoken word clips and interviews with those who lived through that period, and what they learned.

That’s what the Morse above says. Inventor Samuel Morse was pro-slavery and a candidate for the 19th Century version of Trump, the anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic ‘Know Nothing’ Nativist party who started riots over race and religion. He seems oddly relevant to what is happening in the States in the last week with the Capitol Building attempted coup/insurrection.

I found that out after I had recorded this episode but it all seems weirdly in sync with re-evaluating the past and the weird political history of the United States – of recent immigrants pulling up the ladder for later immigrants. And I see now these insurrectionists and rioters are freaking out that they are being arrested, purged from social media and on No Fly lists for storming government buildings to start a revolution. What did they expect?

Music varies in this episode from punk to dub, reggae and rocksteady to arabic funk and disco, acid to indie dance, hiphop to nu-gaze, cosmic disco to chilled neo-classical ambience. With the rushed news of a rushed Tier 3 for Lockdown London (which I have just rebranded Lockdon as of two seconds ago), I decided to follow suit and rush out a podcast early for the second of the Xmas shows. I bet you were ‘havering‘ for it! *bad inside Lockdon joke*

This is of course a mashup show – and the title was spookily locked in (!) days before the announcement as the start of this podcast was recorded back to back with the first Xmas episode #338 – because the Tiers have dropped from 2 to 3 for Lockdon, due to a spike in cases and spite from the North. ‘Why can’t they suffer like us?’ – err thanks?

So a Merry Xmas to all with no pubs, venues, or restaurants open! *sigh*.

Well Xmas is always bittersweet for me, but even more so when it’s basically cancelled…I’d be more happy about that – for indeed I have been calling for more lockdowns – if it wasn’t all run by idiots. And the fact that like the ‘circuit breaker’ it all seems for naught a bit like setting up set of fairy lights on the tree then finding they are in fact dead. And we have the gift of a new mutated strain – oh great, 2020 you shouldnt have!

The rise in cases is mostly in the east of Lockdon it’s funny that in Cockney slang bubble means trouble, as I was telling John, so your ‘Christmas Bubble’ is more akin to a traditional Chrimble fight in the Queen Vic than a harmonious thing – RIP Babs Windsor, btw. We shall see the chaos in the New Year by the relaxing of the rules over five days…I mean people weren’t following the rules when they were in place?!

The mashups are back! A call to arms for the Mashbusters Army, the old guard to come back to life and awaken via the first all-mashup show in nearly a decade fresh for Halloween with quite a few spooky mashes, and also a call to vote in the US election with various political mashups.

Why? Well a recent mashup went viral dredging up an old combination and didn’t credit the original – it does now after I complained – but this isn’t about my beef with him, cos this isn’t a new phenomenon.

People have been remaking, remodelling and remixing our history for a long time, erasing what went before. Constantly stuck in the moment, rebooting the same old thing every few years, like some mashup Groundhog Day – and making out they invented this shit.

It’s hard to develop as a community and culture when stuck in this perpetual loop where people don’t know their history and are doomed to repeat it, like some Sampling Sisyphus. And yes, the younger crowd might kvetch but credit is all we have, it’s important. As you invest more into mashups you’ll change your mind, it’s not ‘unoriginal’ or throwaway at all.

And Illegal or not, we have to respect those who went before, from the hiphop blenders, the disco medleys and the experimental copyright liberation artists. Y’all have to give dues and respect for the past, for we/they made all of this possible with our endless legal fights and building places to share mashups new and old, spreading the word of mashups and it’s history – we built this city with Biggie Pelaz and Rock and Roll! YA RLY!

A long episode of Radio Clash for reasons explained within, this has taken over a week to finish and started out being an uptempo celebration of Windmills of Your Mind, the Mercury Awards and Eddie Van Halen during the first Kitchen Disco Hour…and became rather more downbeat after I learned that Radio Clash has been removed from ITunes after 14 years.
