The state of North America's boreal forests is volatile, to put it mildly. A combination of past practices, complex management challenges involving multiple stakeholders, and climate change have created a perfect storm — in this case, firestorm.

John Cathro has been dealing with these challenges for many years. As noisy protests strangle downtown Ottawa, and truck blockades at the vital Ambassador Bridge linking Windsor, Ontario and Detroit drag on, amidst all the flag-waving, horn honking, and cries of "freedom," Radio Free Kaslo host RG Morse takes a step back and offers some personal anecdotes and thoughts on Canada, and what, historically, makes Canada and the USA different, Whatever one's view of the protesters and their motives, one thing seems clear: their views run counter to the founding precepts Canada is built on. That, in and of itself, is neither a good thing nor a bad thing — it's simply a fact. This is a time to step back for a moment, take a deep breath, and remember who we are, how we got here, and why, regardless of our views on governments of the day, we love our country. And if we want to change it, do so with a clear-eyed understanding of what those changes may lead to.
