  • Vyakti Vishesh : Today's Personality C. V. Raman and Shankar Narayan Navale.

Informative session about the important personality. Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman FRS was an Indian physicist known  for his work in the field of light scattering. Using a spectrograph  that he developed, he and his student K. S. Krishnan discovered that  when light traverses a transparent material, the deflected light changes  its wavelength and frequency. This phenomenon, a hitherto unknown type of scattering of light, which  they called "modified scattering" was subsequently termed the Raman  effect or Raman scattering. Raman received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery and was the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in any branch of science. Born to Tamil Brahmin parents, Raman was a precocious child, completing his secondary and higher secondary education from St Aloysius' Anglo-Indian High School at the ages of 11 and 13, respectively. He topped the bachelor's degree examination of the University of Madras with honours in physics from Presidency College at age 16. His first research paper, on diffraction of light, was published in 1906 while he was still a graduate student. The next year he obtained a master's degree. He joined the Indian Finance Service in Calcutta as Assistant Accountant General at age 19. There he became acquainted with the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), the first research institute in India, which allowed him to do  independent research and where he made his major contributions in acoustics and optics.

  • Vyakti Vishesh : Today's Personality Kalpana Chawla and Edwin Hubble.

Informative session about the important personality. Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut and engineer who was the  first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on Space  Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm  operator. Her second flight was on STS-107, the final flight of Space Shuttle  Columbia in 2003. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and several streets, universities, and institutions have been named in her honor. She is regarded as a national hero in India.

Edwin Powell Hubble was an American astronomer. He played a  crucial role in establishing the fields of extragalactic astronomy and  observational cosmology. Hubble proved that many objects previously thought to be clouds of dust  and gas and classified as "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the  Milky Way. He used the strong direct relationship between a classical Cepheid variable's luminosity and pulsation period (discovered in 1908 by Henrietta Swan Leavitt) for scaling galactic and extragalactic distances. Hubble provided evidence that the recessional velocity of a galaxy increases with its distance from the Earth, a property now known as "Hubble's law", despite the fact that it had been both proposed and demonstrated observationally two years earlier by Georges Lemaître. The Hubble–Lemaître law implies that the universe is expanding. A decade before, the American astronomer Vesto Slipher had provided the first evidence that the light from many of these  nebulae was strongly red-shifted, indicative of high recession  velocities. Hubble's name is most widely recognized for the Hubble Space Telescope, which was named in his honor, with a model prominently displayed in his hometown of Marshfield, Missouri.
