  • असा घडला भारत भाग ७.

    भारताच्या दक्षिणेकडील शेजारी राष्ट्र : सिलोन अर्थात श्रीलंका स्वतंत्र  

             इ.स. १८१५ पासून पूर्णतः ब्रिटिश साम्राज्याच्या आधिपत्याखाली राहिलेल्या सिलोन अर्थात आजच्या श्रीलंका या भारताच्या दक्षिणेकडील द्वीपसमूहात्म राष्ट्राला ४ फेब्रुवारी, १९४८ रोजी स्वातंत्र्य मिळालं. इ. स. पूर्व दुसऱ्या शतकात भारताचा सम्राट अशोकाचा मुलगा महिंद्रा याने सिलोनमध्ये राजा देवनमपियतिस्सा याचं राज्य असताना बौद्ध धर्माचा प्रसार केला आणि तेव्हापासून भरतखंडाचे सिलोनशी वेगवेगळ्या स्तरांवर संबंध राहिले. बौद्ध धर्माच्या प्रभावाने इथे दीर्घ काळ संघराज्य पद्धती राहिली. चारही बाजूंनी समुद्रांनी वेढलेल्या सिलोनमध्ये पुढे अरब व्यापाऱ्यांनी व्यवहार साधले, बस्तान बसवलं. आक्रमक हिंदू राजांनी आक्रमणं केली. स्थानिक राजांचंही राज्य राहिलं. १७व्या शतकाच्या पूर्वार्धापर्यंत इथे विविधधर्मीय व वंशीय राजघराण्यांची सत्ता राहिली. उदाहरणार्थ, पंड्या, चोला (हिंदू), आर्य चक्रवर्ती (तमिळ), अल ग क्कोन रा (सिंहली), चेंग हो (मिंग), आर्य चक्रवर्ती इत्यादी. इ. स. १६१९ मध्ये पोर्तुगीजांनी आर्य चक्रवर्तीचा पराभव करून जाफना राज्याचा ताबा घेतला. त्यानंतर सुमारे पावणेदोनशे वर्षांनी म्हणजे इ.स. १७९६ मध्ये ब्रिटिश इंडिया कंपनीने जाफनावर ताबा मिळवला व नंतर १८०२ मध्ये या भागाला 'क्राऊन कॉलनी' म्हणून जाहीर केलं. नंतर कँडी राज्यावरही पकड मिळवून ब्रिटिश साम्राज्याने १८१५ मध्ये पूर्ण सिलोन वसाहत म्हणून स्वतःच्या अखत्यारीत आणलं. या सर्व काळात अमेरिकन मिशनरीजही इथे पोहोचले; ब्रिटिश अधिकारी दीर्घ काळ वसले. दक्षिण भारतातील तमिळवंशीय १३व्या शतकापासून इथे स्थलांतरित होत राहिले. त्यातूनच ७० टक्के बौद्ध आणि इतर ३० टक्क्यांमध्ये हिंदू, मुस्लीम, ख्रिश्चन, पारशी आदी विविधधर्मीयांचं हे संमिश्र राष्ट्र राहिलं. सिंहली आणि तमिळ हे इथले प्रमुख जनसमूह राहिले.

He was a founding member of Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. He was a great support system for the noble works initiated and carried out successfully by Honorable Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade. He was a social activist in Pune when Maharashtrian revival began, and he was the elderly guiding philosopher when Tilak and Agarkar's generation gave impetus to Indian independence struggle. Joshi also represented Vasudev Balwant Phadke as his lawyer in Phadke's trial. 

    Edward James Corbett CIE VD was a British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India. He held the rank of colonel in the British Indian Army and was frequently called upon by the Government of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, now the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, to kill man-eating tigers and leopards that were preying on people in the nearby villages of the Kumaon-Garhwal Regions.

    भारताच्या आग्नेयेकडील शेजारी राष्ट्र ब्रह्मदेश अर्थात म्यानमार स्वतंत्र - इ.स. १८८६ पासून पूर्णाशाने ब्रिटिश आधिपत्याखाली राहिलेल्या ब्रह्मदेश (आजचं म्यानमार) या भारताच्या आग्नेय सीमेलगतच्या राष्ट्राला ४ जानेवारी, १९४८ रोजी स्वातंत्र्य मिळालं. 'युनियन ऑफ बर्मा' हे नाव धारण केलेल्या या प्रजासत्ताक देशाचे पहिले राष्ट्रपती म्हणून याच दिवशी साओ खे थाईफ यांनी सूत्रं स्वीकारली; तर यू नू हे त्याचे पहिले पंतप्रधान ठरले. स्वातंत्र्य मिळाल्यावर सुमारे १४ वर्षांनी म्हणजे १९६२मध्ये समाजवादाकडे कल असलेल्या जनरल ने विन यांनी प्रस्थापित सत्ता उलटवून आपल्या हाती सत्तेची सूत्रं घेतली. याच काळात बर्माचे यू थांट यांची संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघाचे सचिव म्हणून नेमणूक झाली. पुढे ब्रह्मदेशाला सोव्हिएत रशियाचं पाठबळ लाभलं आणि बौद्ध तत्त्वज्ञान व मार्क्सवादी तत्त्वज्ञानाचा मेळ घालून समाजवादी रचनेची घडी घालण्याचा प्रयत्न केला गेला. ४ जानेवारी, १९७४ रोजी या देशाने समाजवादी राज्यघटनेचा स्वीकार केला आणि याच दिवशी 'युनियन ऑफ बर्मा'चं 'सोशॅलिस्ट रिपब्लिक ऑफ द युनियन ऑफ बर्मा' असं नामकरण झालं. १९७४ ते १९८८ दरम्यान 'बर्मा सोशॅलिस्ट प्रोग्रॅम पार्टी' (बीएसपीपी) या एकमेव पक्षाची राज्यावर पकड राहिली.

    १९८८मध्ये पुन्हा चित्र बदललं. या वर्षीच्या सुरुवातीला लोकशाही समर्थकांनी इथे ‘८८८८अपरायजिंग' म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असलेला हिंसक उठाव केला. त्यानंतर जनरल सॉ माऊंग यांनी 'बीएपीपी' ची सत्ता उलटवून ‘स्टेट लॉ अँड ऑर्डर रिस्टोरेशन' (एसएलओआर) या संघटनेकडे सत्तेची सूत्रं दिली. २३ सप्टेंबर, १९८८ रोजी आपली सत्ता प्रस्थापित करून 'एसएलओआर'ने पुन्हा 'युनियन ऑफ बर्मा' असं नाव धारण केलं ने आणि १९८९मध्ये 'मार्शल लॉ' लागू केला. त्यानंतर १८ जून, १९८९ रोजी 'एसएलओआर' ने 'युनियन ऑफ बर्मा'चं नाव बदलून 'युनियन ऑफ म्यानमार' असं नामकरण केलं. विरोधकांचा जरी या नावाला विरोध होता, तरीही संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघानं मात्र या नावाला अधिकृत मान्यता दिली.

Govindbhai Shroff, also known as the freedom fighter, led a movement to fight against the Nizam of Hyderabad during the Hyderabad Campaign of 1948.     Sir James Chadwick, CH, FRS was a British physicist who was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. In 1941, he wrote the final draft of the MAUD Report, which inspired the U.S. government to begin serious atomic bomb research efforts. He was the head of the British team that worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He was knighted in Britain in 1945 for his achievements in physics.Chadwick graduated from the Victoria University of Manchester in 1911, where he studied under Ernest Rutherford (known as the "father of nuclear physics"). At Manchester, he continued to study under Rutherford until he was awarded his MSc in 1913. The same year, Chadwick was awarded an 1851 Research Fellowship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. He elected to study beta radiation under Hans Geiger in Berlin. Using Geiger's recently developed Geiger counter, Chadwick was able to demonstrate that beta radiation produced a continuous spectrum, and not discrete lines as had been thought. Still in Germany when World War I broke out in Europe, he spent the next four years in the Ruhleben internment camp.

    सशस्त्र टोळ्यांच्या आक्रमणानंतर काश्मीरचं सामिलीकरण :

            भारत-पाकिस्तान फाळणीनंतरही या दोन्ही देशांपासून आपलं स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व राखू पाहणाऱ्या काश्मीर संस्थानावर पाकिस्तान सीमेवरील पठाणी सशस्त्र टोळ्यांनी २२ ऑक्टोबर, १९४७ रोजी जोरदार आक्रमण करून घुसखोरी केली. या पार्श्वभूमीवर, काश्मीरचे राजे हरिसिंग यांनी भारताकडून काश्मीरच्या संरक्षणासाठी त्वरित लष्करी साहाय्य मागितलं आणि २७ ऑक्टोबर, १९४७ रोजी भारत सरकारकडे काश्मीरच्या भारतातील सामिलीकरणास संमती देणारा सामीलनामा सुपूर्द केला.इ. स. १९२५ पासून महाराज हरिसिंग काश्मीरच्या गादीवर होते. ब्रिटिश लवकरच भारत सोडून जाणार याची १९४६ साली चाहूललागल्यानंतर काश्मीरच्या स्वतंत्र अस्तित्वाबद्दल राजे हरिसिंग यांचा विचार सुरू झाला. त्यांचे पंतप्रधान रामचंद्र काक यांचाही त्यांना पाठिंबा होता. जून १९४७मध्ये भारताच्या फाळणीचा निर्णय झाल्यानंतर काश्मीरचा कल जाणून घेण्याच्या उद्देशाने व्हाईसरॉय लॉर्ड माऊंटबॅटन यांनी काश्मीरला भेट देऊन रामचंद्र काक यांच्याशी चर्चा केली. भारत किंवा पाकिस्तान यांपैकी कोणत्याही एका देशात विलीन होण्याचा त्यांनी सल्ला दिला; मात्र काश्मीरचा स्वतंत्र राहण्याचा विचार असल्याचं काक यांनी त्यांना सांगितलं. माऊंटबॅटन यांची या दौऱ्यात महाराज हरिसिंग यांच्याबरोबर भेट होऊ शकली नव्हती.

     स्वातंत्र्याची पहाट ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनीच्या माध्यमातून भारताचं वसाहतीकरण साधल्यावर इ.स. १८५८ मध्ये भारतीय वसाहतीची सूत्रं अधिकृतपणे पूर्णत: इंग्लंडच्या राजाकडे सोपवली गेली होती. अखंड भारतावर साम्राज्यवादी सत्ता लादणाऱ्या ब्रिटिश सरकारने प्रदीर्घ अशा स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यानंतर आणि हजारो स्वातंत्र्यसैनिकांच्या बलिदानानंतर अखेरीस १८ जुलै, १९४७ रोजी ब्रिटिश पार्लमेंटमध्ये ‘१४ ऑगस्ट, १९४७च्या मध्यरात्री भारताला स्वातंत्र्य बहाल केलं जाईल' अशी घोषणा केलेली होती. १४ ऑगस्ट, १९४७ चा तो सुदिन उजाडला. घोषणेनुसार त्या दिवशीच्या संध्याकाळपर्यंत व्हाईसरॉय माऊंटबॅटन यांनी कागदोपत्री सत्तांतराची औपचारिक प्रक्रिया पूर्ण केली. गुलामगिरीच्या काळात देशात सर्वत्र फडकणारे युनियन जॅक त्या दिवशी संध्याकाळी उतरवण्यात आले. १५ ऑगस्ट, १९४७च्या पहाटे भारताला अधिकृतपणे स्वातंत्र्य प्राप्त झालं आणि अत्यंत उत्साहपूर्ण वातावरणात राजधानी दिल्लीत व देशात सर्वत्र भारताचा तिरंगी ध्वज दिमाखाने फडकू लागला. १४ ऑगस्ट : हुरहूर, काहूर आणि उत्साह 

    १४ ऑगस्टच्या दिवशी सगळीकडेच वातावरण आतुरलेलं होतं. उत्साहाबरोबरच मनं कातरलेली होती; आशेनं मनं ओथंबलेली असतानाच निराशेची एक धून मनात काहूर माजवू पाहत होती. देशाभिमानाने ऊर भरून येत असतानाच भविष्याबद्दलची अनामिक अनिश्चितताही भारतीय मनांना भेडसावू पाहत होती. एकंदरीत अशीच एक सार्वत्रिक संमिश्र मानसिकता घेऊन भारतीय जनमन १४ ऑगस्टच्या मध्यरात्रीला सामोरं जाऊ पाहत होतं.
