  • Death toll from Israeli strikes on Lebanon passes 3,000

The war between Israel and Hezbollah has passed a grim milestone.

More than 3,000 people have been killed since the start of the war on the 2nd of March, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry, including some 400 deaths since the US-brokered ceasefire came into force just over a month ago.

The truce - which was extended for a further 45 days on Friday - has so far failed to stop the fighting.

Just one day after it was extended, Israel launched a new wave of air strikes on southern Lebanon - killing dozens of people, while Hezbollah said it responded with a drone attack on northern Israel.

  • Assistant Minister says online claims about CGT changes 'factually incorrect'

Start-up founders are calling on the federal government to rethink ending the 50% capital gains tax discount - over fears it will damage the sector.

Viral AI-generated memes taking aim at the government's changes to capital gains tax have flooded social media feeds, welcoming Anthony Albanese as a "47 per cent silent partner" to their businesses.

  • CGT changes occurred with 'little consultation' tech sector says

Start-up founders are calling on the federal government to rethink ending the 50% capital gains tax discount - over fears it will cripple the sector.

The newly proposed inflation indexation model - announced in the federal budget last week - has been called the most punitive tax treatment on start-up equity in the western world by some in the sector.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the government will consult on the changes.

  • Vladimir Putin arrives in Beijing for talks with Xi Jinping

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Beijing for a two-day visit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping - less than a week after US President Donald Trump's high-profile state visit.

Both countries have cast the meeting - which is Putin's 25th visit to China - as evidence of their "all-weather partnership" in the face of Russia's war with Ukraine, trade tensions and an energy crisis spurred by the conflict in the Middle East.

The pair have described each other as best friends - and said their relationship has no limits.

  • Breakfast Wrap: Why this retailer is ditching their tobacco license

While public health advocates and the tobacco industry argue over the merits of lowering the tobacco excise, small businesses are caught in the middle. We hear from one who says he won't renew his tobacco license.

Then we get an update on the growing Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.

And we speak with a Liberal concerned about his party's stance on immigration.

Recap the morning's news, politics and global affairs with the Breakfast Wrap.

  • Changing Australia: Claire Middleton and the fight against eating disorders

After living with bulimia as a young person, then watching her daughters struggle to get help for anorexia, Claire Middleton knew something had to change.

In 2002 she set up the Butterfly Foundation - which has become a leading national charity for the million-odd Australians affected by eating disorders and body image issues.

  • NT Indigenous groups say child protection laws too complex to respond to in a week

Aboriginal services in the Northern Territory have been given one week to respond to major child protection reforms.

Following the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby in Alice Springs last month, the government has begun a review into the territory's child protection system - introducing new legislation to parliament.

But many First Peoples advocates fear the proposed amendments dilute the "Child Placement Principle" - making it easier for Aboriginal children to be placed permanently with non-Indigenous carers or in group homes.

  • Butler defends private health rebate reduction for pensioners

Older Australians on disability pensions are concerned reductions in private health rebates will mean they won't be able to afford private health insurance.

Meanwhile, the government has announced it will again delay the implementation of formal price caps for support at home aged care services.

    • GUEST: Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Ageing
    • PRODUCER: Isadora Bogle
