  • Murray Watt defends the government's tax changes

Both the major political parties are continuing to make the case for their respective proposals for tax reform after last week's federal budget.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he thinks "people will focus on the substance" of what the government is trying to do, by making changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing.

  • Meat industry not viable without migrant workers, Australian Meat Industry Council says

As the federal opposition ratchets up the debate on immigration, agricultural producers are warning Australia's food supply could be threatened by any sharp cut to the overseas intake.

The Joint Standing Committee on Migration heard late last week that migrant workers not only plug crucial labour gaps - they add to overall job security.

  • WHO declares Congolese Ebola outbreak a global health emergency

The World Health Organisation has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo a public health emergency of international concern.

The virus has also spread across the border into Uganda, where one man has died.

  • Social and affordable housing missed out in budget, advocacy group says

Australia's housing crisis has come into sharper focus following the government's proposed changes to tax concessions aimed at helping first-home buyers enter the market.

The Coalition is drawing links between housing supply and immigration numbers, after Opposition Leader Angus Taylor vowed to cut temporary migration based on the number of new homes built.

So where does that leave the critical need for more social housing around the country?

    • GUEST: Maiy Azize is the National Spokesperson for Everybody's Home and the Deputy CEO of Anglicare Australia.

  • Aid entering Gaza not adequate, says MSF

Hamas has confirmed that Israel killed one of its commanders in a strike on Gaza over the weekend.

Izz al-Din al-Haddad is known as one of the architects of the October 7th attacks - which killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and saw more than 250 hostages taken.

He was killed in an air strike on a residential building on Friday along with seven other Palestinians - including one child.

There's technically been a ceasefire in place in Gaza for the past six months, but air strikes have been reported as a near-daily occurrence.

Humanitarian groups have also been warning about how dire the humanitarian situation is, including a lack of critical infrastructure such as water or health services, infestations of rats and other pests, and rising malnutrition.

New South Wales' live music scene is back in the spotlight today, with the first round of hearings for the inquiry that's looking into the state of the industry.

The state's "vibrancy reforms" - which included extending trading hours and dropping liquor licence fees for live music venues - have already seen a four-fold increase of bars and pubs now hosting live music compared to 2023.

This latest inquiry will examine what more needs to be done to keep the state's live music culture thriving and sustainable.
