Mining giant Glencore has accepted a $600 million support package from the Queensland and federal governments to save its ailing sites.

The deal aims to keep the Swiss multinational's Mount Isa Copper Smelter and adjoining Townsville Refinery operational until the end of 2028.

The Attorney-General's Department has been unable to say how many Freedom of Information (FOI) requests come from anonymous or automated sources.

The revelation came this week in Senate estimates hearings, as the government tries to push through FOI reforms which have been criticised by public transparency advocates.

Labor has cited the burden on public servants to deal with anonymous or automated applications as a key reason for the reforms.

Australia's institutional stock exchange has a new rival.

Chicago-based Cboe has won regulatory approval to begin listing companies for investors on its platform, promising greater innovation and support services.

It comes amid scrutiny of the Australian Securities Exchange, with the corporate regulator launching a landmark inquiry and lawsuit following recurring trade-processing glitches.

An Australian soldier fighting in Ukraine has been sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison by a Russian court.

The Russian embassy in Australia says Kallen Benjamin Lewis was found guilty of breaching Russia's criminal code by participating as a mercenary in an armed conflict.

Israelis gathered across the country overnight to mark the second anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which saw about 1200 people killed and 251 hostages taken.

Danny Majzner's sister,  Australian-Israeli Galit Carbone, was murdered at a Kibbutz on October 7.

Today, Mr Majzner will meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong.
