  • 'We've got to rediscover that spirit of disagreeing agreeably': Julian Hill

"Numerous societies have slipped into conflict or fallen apart when inter-communal fear and forces of hatred run out of control."

That's the warning from Labor MP Julian Hill, as the federal government moves to mend fraying social cohesion in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.

In a speech to the McKell Institute yesterday, the Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs also said there's been an overemphasis on identity politics.

  • Tasmania salmon industry on notice over antibiotic use

Debate is intensifying in Tasmania over the use of antibiotics in the salmon industry.

Salmon farmers could be banned from using the antibiotic florfenicol as early as next week; after the drug was detected in abalone and lobsters more than 10 kilometres from the nearest salmon pens.

Authorities have proposed suspending emergency permits -- which allowed companies to use the antibiotic.

The industry has been using the drug to combat a bacterial disease which led to a mass mortality event last year.

It was the longest State of the Union address in history, where the US President Donald Trump was combative with his Democratic opponents, especially when defending his immigration crackdown.

The President also looked to tout his economic record, but leading economist Justin Wolfers isn't convinced that all the claims stack up.

  • Breakfast Wrap: Why there's more UK Epstein fallout than in the US

Why has the Epstein files lead to a more significant fallout in the UK, but not in the US?

In the UK, a former prince and a former ambassador face criminal investigations over their links to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while a number of government officials have lost their jobs.

But in the US, prominent figures whose names come up thousands of times in the latest tranche of files - released by the US Department of Justice - remain unscathed.

We hear from the former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter.

Then, we turn to the trial of Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court.

We cover the start of the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.

And ask why AI development is still outpacing regulation.

Recap the morning's news, politics and global affairs with the Breakfast Wrap.
