  • Tehan's promise as Liberals unveil energy policy

The Liberal Party has announced its new energy policy, saying it has scrapped a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050, while remaining committed to the Paris Agreement.

The party is negotiating with the Nationals, who abandoned net zero earlier this month, to settle on a Coalition energy policy position.

  • Australia to continue work on COP31 bid: Bowen

The Liberal Party has formally dumped its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 and is now negotiating with the Nationals to settle on a Coalition energy policy position.

The decision comes as the government maintains its bid to host next year's COP climate change summit, despite a competing bid from Turkiye

  • Trump, Epstein relationship under fresh scrutiny

Ties between convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and US President Donald Trump are under increased scrutiny this week, following the release of more than 20,000 pages of documents from Epstein's estate by U-S lawmakers.

Among the documents are emails written by Epstein one in which he describes Mr Trump as "a dog that hasn't barked."

The president continues to deny all wrongdoing.

  • What impact do emissions targets have on energy bills?

After months of fierce internal debates, the Liberals have followed the Nationals and abandoned net zero emissions by 2050.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley says her priority is prosecuting the government on rising energy bills.

But the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, argues abandoning emissions targets will push up power prices.

  • Starmer under growing pressure as leadership rumours swirl

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is under growing pressure amid questions over his future as leader.

Health secretary Wes Streeting has rejected reports he's contemplating a bid for the top job, after allies of the Prime Minister told media outlets they were concerned about his ambitions.

The episode has exposed the despair among some Labour MPs as the party slumps in the polls and Reform UK surges ahead.

  • Starmer demands BBC 'get its house in order' following Trump edit

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he supports a strong, independent BBC,  but is demanding the broadcaster must "get its house in order" as it faces the threat of being sued by Donald Trump.

It comes after the BBC's director-general and head of news quit, over a misleading edit of a speech by US President Donald Trump.

President Trump is demanding up to a billion dollars in damages — a payout that could force the BBC to compensate him with licence-fee money, and intensify political pressure on the organisation.

    • Guest: Lewis Goodall, journalist, broadcaster and co-host of The News Agents podcast, and a former BBC Newsnight policy editor.

  • Breakfast Wrap: Victoria's 'adult time for violent crime' laws under scrutiny

"Adult Crime, Adult Time" was a policy that the Queensland LNP took to last year's state election and won.

Now, ahead of Victoria's state election next year, Premier Jacinta Allan has announced a similar policy to help tackle rising youth crime in the state.

We'll explore than, and the Liberals ministerial meeting on net-zero by 2050.

It comes after Liberal MPs and senators met for almost five hours at Parliament House yesterday, with the majority of attendees calling for the target to be abandoned.

Then, two years ago the Matildas were the most-watched sporting team in the country as they battled to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Australia.

But a new report into the domestic football league warns the sport may have squandered that attention, with crowds in decline and players among the lowest-earning female athletes in the country.

And Australia has struck a bilateral security deal with Indonesia, the second major treaty Australia has negotiated in as many months.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the deal alongside Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto in Sydney.
