  • Veteran reporter Lyse Doucet reflects on Afghanistan

In 1988, young journalist Lyse Doucet walked through the doors of Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel on her first visit to Afghanistan.

Little did she know, she'd stay for a year and keep returning over the following decades to report on the country and its people.

Now the BBC's Chief International correspondent has written a book about the fortress-like Intercontinental perched high on a hill over the Afghan capital.

    • Guest: Lyse Doucet, BBC's Chief International Correspondent and author of The Finest Hotel in Kabul: A People's History of Afghanistan
    • Producer: Teodora Agarici

  • Trump orders troops into Portland amid local opposition

Los Angeles, Washington DC, Memphis and now Portland, Oregon.

US President Donald Trump has ordered troops into the west coast city, authorising them to use "full force" if needed to protect federal immigration facilities from what he calls domestic terrorists.

Oregon's Democratic leaders say the city is calm and the move is an abuse of power. They warn Mr Trump may be replaying his 2020 playbook, when federal forces sent to Portland only escalated protests rather than ending them.

    • Guest: Taylor Griggs, journalist at the Portland Mercury in Oregon
    • Producers: Anne Barker, Oscar Coleman

  • PM Albanese vows to defend democracy at UK Labour conference

The Prime Minister has wrapped up a visit to the UK with an address to the Labour party conference in Liverpool.

During the speech, Mr Albanese vowed to defend democracy itself while standing alongside the man he described as his"mate": British PM Sir Keir Starmer.

It comes after the Australian PM leaned into the comfort of the Commonwealth, enjoying lunch with King Charles at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

    • Guest: Tom Baldwin, British journalist and biographer of Keir Starmer and a former UK Labour staffer
    • Producer: Anne Barker

  • Breakfast Wrap: How has Australia fared on the world stage?

As Australia took to the world stage at the UN General Assembly, officially recognising the State of Palestine and touting its incoming social media laws, the PM also booked a long-awaited one-on-one meeting with the US President Donald Trump.

We'll wrap the week with our Friday political panel, the acting Prime Minister Richard Marles, and the Shadow Trade Minister Kevin Hogan.

Then, something different - the race to mine the moon.

You'll hear from a company making very real plans to start a resources industry on the lunar surface.

Recap the morning's news, politics and global affairs with the Breakfast Wrap.

  • Opposition calls for clarity on cost of emissions cut

As the Prime Minister lands in London, the Opposition back home is pressing the government to detail how much its emissions reduction pledge will cost.

    • Guest: Kevin Hogan, Shadow Minister for Trade, Investment and Tourism and Deputy Leader of the National Party
    • Producers: Teodora Agarici and Lexie Jeuniewic

  • Marles says 'no link' between timing of AUKUS review, PM's Trump meeting

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had a big week at the UN General Assembly, outlining Australia's commitments to climate change, social media restrictions and the government's decision to recognise Palestine.

The Prime Minister also managed to secure a face-to-face meeting with the US President for next month.

While the Pentagon's review into AUKUS is also expected to be released next month, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles insists there is "no link" between the timing of its release and the PM's meeting with Donald Trump.

    • Guest: Richard Marles, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence

  • Lifesavers prepare for summer after rise in drownings last year

Red and yellow flags will be raised once again on Australian beaches this weekend as the summer patrol season kicks off.

Surf life saving clubs across the country are warning beach-goers to understand the risks and swim between the flags, after Australia's drowning death toll soared to its highest level since records began almost three decades ago.

    • Guest: Professor Rob Brander, beach safety researcher with the University of NSW
    • Producer: Grace Stranger

  • Iran faces possible return of UN sanctions over nuclear deal

Iran could face the sudden return of UN sanctions as early as this weekend after the UK, France, and Germany triggered a 30-day deadline tied to the 2015 nuclear deal.

The so-called 'snapback' process means sanctions lifted under that deal will automatically return if Iran is judged to have broken the rules.

European leaders say Tehran still has only hours left to let inspectors in and resume talks to avoid the measures.

    • Guest: Ellie Geranmayeh, senior policy fellow and deputy head of the Middle East and North Africa Programme (MENA) at the European Council on Foreign Relations
    • Producer: Anne Barker
