National award creates Gulf Scholars program to enhance student exploration of Florida’s coastal issues  USF St. Pete has received a major national award — $600,000 from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine — to launch the new Gulf Scholars Program starting in Fall 2026.  Approximately 20 undergraduate students from any major will be selected to take part in this two-year program. Each student will receive up to $3,500 in scholarship support and engage in Gulf-themed coursework, hands-on learning, and a capstone “Gulf
Impact Project” meant for public sharing.  The program draws on the university’s waterfront location and existing community partnerships along Florida’s Gulf coast. It’s designed not just for science majors — students from humanities or social science backgrounds can dive in too, studying coastal hazards,  water quality, population changes, identity of place, and more.   Program leaders say this initiative gives students early exposure to research and community engagement — preparing them as leaders and changemakers for the Gulf region’s dynamic environmental and social challenges.

Veteran reflects the personal growth and determination of first-gen students at USF  First-generation college student and U.S. Navy veteran Camrie Hingle shares her remarkable story of resilience. Having survived Hurricane Katrina in her youth and served seven years as a parachute rigger in the Navy, she is now pursuing a marketing degree while  raising her young daughter. Her determination and background reflect the strength and diversity of more than 7,000 first-generation students on campus.  
Hingle credits her military service and upbringing—watching her parents build their own small business—as key motivators. “Knowledge is something no one can take from you,” she says, and she hopes her journey will inspire her daughter and other first-gen students  alike. With programs and support systems in place, USF continues to celebrate and empower first-generation achievers, especially during First Gen Week.

USF research funding surges to record $750 million, increasing impact across Florida and beyond 

USF has hit a new milestone: in fiscal year 2025, its research funding soared to
$750 million, marking an $11.6 million increase over the previous year and a 37 % jump since 2022. Much of this growth comes from diverse sources — federal agencies, state and local government, and private industry — enabling USF to broaden its reach into
areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, health sciences and environmental resilience.  

What this means for the Tampa Bay region and the state of Florida is significant. With private and industry partners alone contributing $284 million and state/local support rising to $82 million, USF is strengthening its partnerships and stepping up as a major
 force in both innovation and applied research.  

University leadership says this record year brings them closer to their goal of $1 billion in research funding by 2030 — building the foundation for discoveries that will impact lives, economies and communities across Florida and beyond.

💛 The landmark exhibition offers a rare look at Curtis’ work, tracing his three-decade photographic career alongside broader shifts in American art. At the heart of the exhibition is a striking special Portrait Gallery Installation featuring a powerful display of many of the individuals who shaped his vision. The special Portrait Gallery Installation also launches The James Museum’s research initiative to further research and reinterpret his body of work.  Curtis (1858-1952), an American photographer and ethnologist, is best known for his extensive photographic record of Native American cultures documented in his prodigious early 20th-century publication, The North American Indian.
💛 This landmark exhibition, the first of its kind, reframes Curtis as more than a documentarian. He was also an artist influenced by the major cultural and artistic movements of his era.  Curtis’ early photographs reflect the emotive qualities of Romanticism and Pictorialism, while his later works echo the bold experimentation of Modernism and the grounded realism of Regionalism. Rooted in the Arts & Crafts Movement, his monumental project, The North American Indian, stands as one of the most ambitious publishing efforts in American history, blending artistry and cultural documentation in ways that continue to resonate.
💛 Visitors will encounter Curtis’ work in conversation with artwork by his contemporaries—including Dorothea Lange, Thomas Hart Benton and Edward Steichen—that situate him firmly within the broader artistic and cultural movements of his era. This framing provides a richer understanding of the shifting public opinions of the time and deepening recognition of the ways in which artists were responding to these cultural changes. Complementing the exhibition is the special Portrait Gallery Installation, which shifts attention from the art movements that influenced Curtis to the individuals who shaped his vision. Featuring 84 Native American portraits, approximately one from each Native American tribe Curtis visited as part of his seminal project, The North American Indian , the Portrait Gallery Installation recasts the subjects as active participants and collaborators on Curtis’s massive project. While the sitters have sometimes been cast as bystanders or victims, visitors are reminded of their agency as active and informed participants. The research for the installation, part of the Museum’s broader initiative, focuses on uncovering the identities and stories of sitters whose names were never recorded. 
💛Collection and complemented by loans from museums, private collections, and foundations nationwide, the exhibition features more than 160 pieces within the 2 sections of the exhibition.  A series of informative and engaging programs accompanies the exhibition, offering visitors deeper insight into Curtis’ work and its reflection of the changing world around him.

In this episode of ARTS ALIVE!, St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung ask "What is art, anyway?"  If it’s in the eye of the beholder, then why are there discussions, disagreements and out-and-out arguments about what constitutes art? Shouldn’t art mean different things to different people?  Art is also the name of a dark and cannily verbose comedy by Yasmina Reza, the French playwright who also gave the world God of Carnage. The show opened Thursday at the Off-Central in St. Petersburg, where it will stay through Nov. 23.  On this Arts Alive! podcast we welcome the entire cast of the Off-Central production, three women who portray three women who simply can’t agree on an interpretation of art. One painting in particular. That’s the starting point, at any rate, for what transpires during the 90 rollercoaster minutes of Reza's play. Seline (Ami Salee), Margot (Vera Samuels) and Yvonne (Debbie Yones) are tightly-knit friends whose bonds come dangerously close to unraveling as they bicker, spar and spill their guts over the course of a single, alcohol-fueled night.  Salee, Samuels and Yones have forged a friendship of their own, and in this interview they all talk about how they bonded in rehearsals, even as their characters were saying awful things to one another.
