It is the season of Thanksgiving. We are quickly approaching Thanksgiving, a whole day set aside for being thankful. I love this time of year, but I also really, really love the idea of living a life, not just a day, filled with gratitude.

Gratitude takes practice. It is something that you need to commit to for the long haul. Gratitude is definitely a marathon mindset, not a sprint. It is something we focus on this month, but if we focus on it all year long, there is much to be gained. There are some big wins when we are able to cultivate an attitude of gratitude that is cemented into our being. It makes for kinder tweens, more patient parents, and homes that are filled with more joy.

When we show gratitude to someone for something, it connects us to them. We form a bond. Our hearts are grateful and our endorphins are released because they brought us happiness. When we are socially connected to others, we feel supported, we feel known, and we feel cared for. That is the stuff of happiness friends. Oh I know your tween things that a new phone will bring her happiness - but the phone is not really what makes her happy. It is the connectedness with people that she thinks the phone will bring. Well today friends, we are talking about how to get your girls talking. Has anyone out there ever thrown out this question hoping for a really great conversation filled with lots of details.... But it just doesn’t go how you planned. Instead it goes something like this….How was school today, honey?  “Good.” What did you learn about today? “Stuff.” How was hanging out with your friends today? “Fine.”

Well, my friend, If you are longing to hear more about what is going on in your daughter’s heart and mind. If you are truly wanting to connect more and dialogue more. If you are just trying to get her to even understand and comprehend the basics of a back and forth conversation, then you are in the right place. I think I have something that is going to be incredibly helpful to you. Today we are talking about three words that can make amazing progress in moving the needle forward in conversations.

Another great resource for you is talking about the Conversation Ball with your daughter so she knows how valuable and helpful it is to keep a conversation going. Are you having clothing wars?  Are you noticing that her body is changing as she hits puberty? Your little girl is starting to get curves. If you notice it, then other people will too.

Modesty is not just about what we wear.  Modesty is also about teaching our girls that their value comes from the inside out. Once we know our worth is on the inside, then it makes a lot more sense to cover up more of our body parts to help others notice our personhood first, not our body parts.

The Girl Scouts of America notes that 1 in 10 girls is catcalled before her 11th birthday. Surveys conducted by Cornell University’s ILR School and the nonprofit organization Hollaback! reveal nearly 85 percent of American female respondents report facing street harassment before age 17; nearly 70 percent before age 14. 

Almost 80 percent of women report they were followed by harassers at some point. Catcalls on the street or anywhere are maybe one of the first experiences that girls have of being objectified. It can feel shameful and frightening and you're not even sure why. Girls don’t invite this behavior from men yet they are routinely looked at as being responsible to prevent it. Maddening, right? Wondering what to say, I know I always did!

Picking your Fierce Five is a process that is something that you can do together, and that is why it is so pivotal to do in the tween years, because you still have your daughter’s ear. What you say and do is still really important and meaningful to her!

So what exactly is the Fierce Five? Let’s get into it.

Your Fierce Five is the circle of adult female mentors that you are going to intentionally surround your daughter with and help her to engage with. This circle of her Fierce Five are those women that you know and trust to give her wise counsel and share your values. These women are going to give her an amazing opportunity to feel invested in, loved on, and like she has some adult friends. 

Five women, instead of one that can pour into your girl. This is why this is so helpful to you and your daughter. If you plan for her fierce five to take her out twice a year that is ten dates. If you plan for one a month, that is ten months of the year. Maybe you want to take December off and maybe you want to take one summer month of where you are on vacation. That leaves you the bulk of the year where your daughter gets to go out with five different women and spend an hour chatting about life. This is a much easier ask of your friends as well.

Today we are talking about how to forgive someone. This is super hard when we get hurt. Sometimes really deeply. It is hard to navigate those feelings and emotions and part of forgiveness is giving trust back to someone who broke trust with us. So doggone hard.

Forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to let go of your feelings of anger or getting revenge toward someone who has hurt you whether they deserve it or not - you decide to release it and not keep thinking about it or dwelling on it or getting revenge. Forgiveness is the art of dropping it rather than carrying it with you everywhere you go.

Forgiveness is about goodness, about extending mercy to those who’ve harmed us, even if they don’t “deserve” it.

How do we forgive?

Forgive the small things first.
Forgive the big things next.
When words are hard, write a letter, bury something, or drop something to let go.
Choose to bless rather than curse.
Reconcile the relationship when possible

Last week we talked all about raising an introverted tween girl so today we are continuing our little two part series and talking about raising extroverted tween girls. 

So just a review for us is that an introvert is someone who prefers calm, modestly stimulating environments, they are energized by being alone and enjoy doing activities either alone or with one or two people. And an extrovert is someone who is energized being around other people, they mix well in social situations, and like doing activities with other people. 

Which one do you think that you are?  Which one do you think that your tween daughter is?  Now most of us have a little bit of each in our personality mix, but we tend to lean one direction or the other. 

Today we are going to talk about our tween daughters who lean a little bit more towards the extroverted side. If you think your daughter is more introverted, please be sure to go back to last week’s episode #007 and listen to learn about all things surrounding tween introverts. But today we are on to extroverts. 

Our extroverted girls don’t feel they have fully experienced something until they’ve shared it with others. So take the time to listen, mom, let her know that you want to be the one to hear all about - well everything. Become her "go-to" that is excited to hear her stories and thoughts!

It is easy for extraverts to put too much value on their interactions with others. Interacting with others can become so important to extroverts that they often find it difficult if they’re stuck alone. Boredom comes too easily. This can lead them to do things simply for excitement rather than thinking through all the details of what the end result may be.

Helping our tween extroverts get involved but also asking the questions on a regular basis, why do you want to do this? What will the outcome of this decision be can be really helpful in giving our extroverted girls a process to think through their actions.
