World Thrombosis Day
On this episode, we’re broadcasting from the Zucker School of Medicine to focus on an often underdiagnosed and overlooked public health problem that affects 300 to 600 thousand Americans each year. Called VTE or venous thromboembolism, it is a term that refers to a blood clot that starts in a vein that can lead to major illness or worse—and it can happen to anyone. In fact, it is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide according to our guest expert who will help us to better understand the dangers, treatment, and prevention for this common disorder.
Joining us is Alex Spyropoulos, MD, professor of medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine and professor at the Center for Health Innovations and Outcomes Research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. He is also system Director – Anticoagulation and Clinical Thrombosis Services Northwell Health at Lenox Hill Hospital and a member of the steering committee for World Thrombosis Day, a public awareness campaign for VTE.
