Cocaine BearAir is the latest Ben Affleck directed film, once again teaming up with long time buddy Matt Damon to bring us the underdog story of how Nike overtook Converse and Adidas to become the number one athletic shoe company in the world, all thanks to Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan shoe line. It’s a quality film, but as McCurdy once pointed out, every year there’s an Oscar contender that is really well acted, but too low-key to really make any waves. This is that movie. The performances are the highlight, but the story is just too matter-of-fact to walk out of the theater with head and heart buzzing. It’s the movie equivalent of someone telling you an interesting piece of trivia. It tickles you for a moment, and then you move on with your life. “Hey dude, did you know that Michael Jordan almost didn’t sign with Nike for the Air Jordan’s?” “No, I didn’t know that, thanks for telling me. Hey what should we get for lunch?”Find us on these platforms:Rumble: https://rumble.com/user/theRANKEDpodcastDiscord: https://discord.gg/DBCbJU3WzmSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/00O7Y6GMOpaHv7NyGytwCGApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ranked/id1667596243Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/20b61c14-953f-43c7-8970-e71b9d453ad0/rankedAnchor: https://anchor.fm/rankedpodcastPodvine: https://podvine.com/podcast/ranked-prHLxUfEv8wgYTelegram: https://t.me/RANKEDpodcastSupport the show by using these affiliate links:GET A BUG-A-SALT HERE: https://amzn.to/3Cya379If you enjoy our work, here's our crypto tip jar:BTC: bc1qz6s04aw2qdkl946uttpqgtqv06utfd287vmu90Dogecoin: DKzAwyN3neSeWfSwTBPcDp1NJafypqWooe

The music, the colorful worlds and characters, all brought to you by the original creator Shigeru Miyamoto. It’s a funny movie, and kids are sure to love it, but it’s not great, in fact it falls a little flat.Mostly because the Mario world has always been fueled by imagination and gameplay, not meaningful story. This ain’t Final Fantasy or Halo. There isn’t much to work with in the story department worthy of an entire film, especially because Mario’s sole motivation has always been to get the girl. Apparently you can’t do that today. So what’s left?Rope in as many different games as possible into a loose plot. Mario, Mariokart, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong. All of those are fun games to play, but here are just fancy cutscenes of a video game I’d rather be playing. Everyone’s motivation is loose and there’s no character arc for anybody, so there’s no purpose, no punch, nothing that elevates this outing from a video game to a movie. It’s more akin to watching someone else play your favorite video games on twitch. In fact the storyline is the same as Super Mario Odyssey, arguably the best Mario game ever made, and frankly I’d rather just play that instead.Find us on these platforms:Rumble: https://rumble.com/user/theRANKEDpodcastDiscord: https://discord.gg/DBCbJU3WzmSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/00O7Y6GMOpaHv7NyGytwCGApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ranked/id1667596243Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/20b61c14-953f-43c7-8970-e71b9d453ad0/rankedAnchor: https://anchor.fm/rankedpodcastPodvine: https://podvine.com/podcast/ranked-prHLxUfEv8wgYTelegram: https://t.me/RANKEDpodcastSupport the show by using these affiliate links:GET A BUG-A-SALT HERE: https://amzn.to/3Cya379If you enjoy our work, here's our crypto tip jar:BTC: bc1qz6s04aw2qdkl946uttpqgtqv06utfd287vmu90Dogecoin: DKzAwyN3neSeWfSwTBPcDp1NJafypqWooe

Cocaine BearDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is one of those hit and miss movies. It’ll get a big laugh, and then a flatline. It’ll get really creative and interesting, and then drop off for a few scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I like this movie in a guilty pleasure sort of way, but I’ll always save praise for the stuff that’ll last, and this movie simply won’t.Why? Because it suffers from the general nihilistic malaise that plagues today’s movies that don’t have the balls, nor the talent, to inject any meaning. The obvious withholding of romance, for example. Are we all so jaded that Hollywood is scared to show two people getting together in a classically romantic way? There are multiple couples in this movie and nobody gets together. Only one of them “verbally consents” to get together at a later time. It’s like watching “Friendzone: the movie.”I get that it’s a fantasy, but that’s all the more reason to inject a little humanity, so that it’s not JUST a bunch of weirdos throwing magic around. We need a little humanity in our stories because, ummm, we’re human!!

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER: Sean Connery returns for one last go around (at least as far as Cubby Broccoli is concerned) as James Bond 007, and in the process opens the door for goofiness and the surreal within the Bond-verse, as well as LGBTQ+ assassins and all kinds of weird fun. Remember that new world I talked about last week with OHMSS? Yea, never mind about that. James Bond goes full Austin Powers in "Diamonds Are Forever," a story that puts 007 in the role of the Fonz who jumps the sh*t out of a shark. I could lay out the ridiculous plot that is near impossible to follow, mixed with all kinds of stuff that makes no sense, but why ruin the fun? All you need to know is that Sean Connery is back for one last go around with ridiculous and freaky LGBTQ assassins, a hilarious lunar rover chase, Jimmy Dean the sausage man, and Guy Hamilton doing everything possible to make sure your brain severs ties with Peter Hunt's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" by going in the complete opposite direction. Anybody that thought that dark, stark, and depressing film wasn't all that much fun, eat your heart out, because Diamonds Are Forever is the ultimate action comedy in the Bond-verse.

Cocaine BearJohn Wick: Chapter 4 continues the trigger-happy madness of the John Wick series, doing exactly what sequels do best: escalate. The primary theme of this series is rules, choices, and consequences, this film fully realizing the ULTIMATE consequence of John’s failure to stay retired, all the while maintaining the essence of that which a John Wick film is: elegance.Has there ever been a more elegant action film series?I think not. These movies are simply gorgeous. The production design and cinematography are off the charts, and when coupled with the sociopathic executions and mayhem driven set-pieces, creates the perfect marriage of beauty and brutality. They also brought in Donnie Yen for this chapter, which is always a good decision if you want to class the joint up.There’s not much more to say other than go see this film and rejoice in its majesty.

Fury of the Gods does what good sequels do best: take the premise of the first film and crank up the stakes. In this case, instead of some guy looking to steal Billy Batson’s powers like in the first film, this time it’s the daughters of Atlas looking to TAKE BACK THE STOLEN POWERS OF THE GODS from Billy and his super-siblings. Same thing, but bigger.Sometimes with sequels like this the spectacle overtakes the plot in a way that diminishes the core of the story, which is of course Billy still struggling with his place in the world, both as an orphan with a new step-family, and as a super hero with the heart and mind of a child. This sequel rides that balance well, the difficult task of giving us the exact same thing, but not so similar that it comes across as lazy, but not so off the mark that it fails to deliver what we can now say a Shazam movie is: an action filled comedy about school-life, family-life, and a legitimately hilarious take on what might happen if a group of disparate orphans were given superpowers.I say all of this knowing full well what this is: not a graphic novel film, but the quintessential “comic book” movie, where ridiculousness is welcomed, including the most shamelessly hilarious candy product placement since E.T. ate Reese’s Pieces.Find us on these platforms:Youtube: youtube.com/rankedpodcastRumble: https://rumble.com/user/theRANKEDpodcastDiscord: https://discord.gg/DBCbJU3WzmSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/00O7Y6GMOpaHv7NyGytwCGApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ranked/id1667596243Anchor: https://anchor.fm/rankedpodcastPodvine: https://podvine.com/podcast/ranked-prHLxUfEv8wgYTelegram: https://t.me/RANKEDpodcastSupport the show by using these affiliate links:GET A BUG-A-SALT HERE: https://amzn.to/3Cya379If you enjoy our work, here's our crypto tip jar:BTC: bc1qz6s04aw2qdkl946uttpqgtqv06utfd287vmu90Dogecoin: DKzAwyN3neSeWfSwTBPcDp1NJafypqWooe

Previous Episode RANKED List:
Scream VI continues the wildly meta and self-aware film industry commentary of the Scream series with all of the familiar winks and nods to what it’s doing as it’s telling you what it’s doing while it’s doing it.
These movies are something you just gotta sit back and adore for what they are: people in a movie talking about movies while trying to guess the end of their own movie. It’s like somebody taking a joke way too far, but because they’re aware that they’re doing so, it takes something otherwise trite to a level that is just plain clever.
If Scream, AKA Scream 5, was all about analyzing the reboot sequel, “requel” phenomenon and “toxic” fandom, Scream VI is about the franchise, where everything has to be bigger and bloodier than everything that came before while also ceremoniously killing off select legacy characters that would never have been killed back during the initial sequels.
However, that’s not what this movie is, which is unfortunate as this is a series that’s all about each installment knowing exactly what installment it is. The film commentary dialogue SHOULD have been about the “nostalgia” and "fan-service" trend, especially when a major part of the movie is a literal Ghostface Killer SHRINE. Instead, it’s as if all of the meta-commentary was just more of the same franchise talk from the last movie.
So while this installment may have the horrifically entertaining set pieces that are a franchise staple, it doesn’t have the same level of purpose in its self-awareness, and once that core element of Scream is weakened, it’s nothing more than a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. Please, Scream producers, if you’re going to succeed with this rebooted series, we need you to escalate to absurdity. We need you to jump the shark while also being self-aware that you are doing so. Otherwise you’re just giving us more of the same, thereby becoming one of the washed up franchises you were once so great at making fun of.

Creed three officially welcomes us to 2023 as we exit the obligatory doldrums of January and February. Finally, a real movie with real characters and drama and a clear theme we’re left to ponder: Regret, as an old friend of Adonis Creed comes back as an enemy looking to steal back the life he believes Creed stole from him.
It may not be as perfect as the first Creed, and it may not have the extreme dramatic highs and lows of the second Creed, but it certainly has the most interesting and unique nemesis of the Rocky/Creed franchise to date, leading to the ultimate message of the film:
Sometimes words are not enough. Sometimes when communication fails someone who can punch should aim their fist directly into the face of a dude that simply needs to get hit, a reminder that actions have consequences and so long as we live in a physical reality, “use your words” just doesn’t cut it.
Creed III may not be a list topper for the Rocky/Creed franchise or otherwise, but it certainly acts as a reminder that this franchise is always bringin it, and you should support it with your money and attention.

Previous Episode RANKED List:
Cocaine Bear is the perfect example of a movie with a unique idea that, upon watching it, you quickly realize is just that: a singular idea. A bear doing cocaine may be “funny” for a minute or two in any other movie, but not enough to sustain its own movie, because once the novelty wears off we need something else. Anything else. But this movie has nothing else. And as far as tone goes I have no idea what this is. It’s not funny enough to be a comedy. It’s not thrilling enough to be a thriller. And it’s certainly not a dark comedy. A comedy doesn’t suddenly become “dark” just because it’s excessively violent. Dark comedies have grit and are played straight, and the humor comes from the absurdity of the events transpiring within that serious tone. Instead this movie has the bright and shiny appearance and obnoxious performances of a cartoon, but nothing clever or interesting beyond its ear-catching title. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, DON’T. Whatever idea you have in your head right now based on the title is far better than what the movie actually is, so please, live out the rest of your life with that and stay far away from this loathsome and unfunny piece of scat.
