Ransom Note

There are very few as innovative and humble as Sascha Funke, a revered producer, disc jockey and all round gentleman. Since 1999 he has helped push electronic music forwards in more ways than he is perhaps accredited for. Releases on the likes of Kompakt, BPitch and Cadeux helped establish him as a reckonable force amidst a time in which dance music underwent an interesting transitional spell. His sound has evolved with age: exploring the roots between experimental electronics, minimal, house and ambient he has established himself as a figurehead for respectability and his recent output has continued to demonstrate this as such. Last year marked the release of a new album on Endless Flight and followed on from EP's on Multi Culti and Turbo.

A fresh faced wave of new talent has steadily blossomed amidst the Portugese backdrop. Fresh faces are reinventing the wheel, weaving the notion of genre and taste into wild new tapestry. Caroline Lethô is a producer and disc jockey who is slowly but surely attaining recognition for her interesting take on dance and electronic music. Exuberantly experimental her radio show on Radio Quantica has attracted the attention of many, this has since been accompanied by a string of stellar dj sets across Europe. Further collaborations with the likes of Violet and BLEID have helped champion her as a prolific member of the Portugese underground.

Much of his own taste emerged through personal exploration and through the inspiration of the scenic yet sometimes unforgiving environment which encompassed his world around him. However, whilst some might abide to live a life amidst the remote and lonely mountains Pietro used such circumstances to his advantage, using them as an enchanting backdrop to his own musical prosperity. Years later he has now established himself as a forward thinking musician with a back catalogue behind him of which many will be envious. He has released music most prominently on the Italian record label Bad Panda but has also appeared on the likes of Friends Of Friends.

We invited him to contribute to our Monday mix series and he did so in fine style selecting music by the likes of Visible Cloaks, Yves Tumor, Bibio, Malibu and more.

It's a new year and a new dawn, an opportunity to showcase some of the best up and coming talent within music and we here at Ransom Note take such a role very seriously indeed. It is for this reason that we have nominated Darling to deliver our first mix of 2018, a producer and disc jockey from Amsterdam who is steadily gathering momentum, ready to unleash force upon the globe. Last year saw him release an EP on the record label run by Young Marco, Safe Trip. The label has crafted a home for itself amidst the Dutch capital and has released an array of music, both new and old, from producers often operating along a vain similar to that of Marco himself.

We have been told that 2018 holds exciting prospects for Darling as a producer as he will be releasing a new series of 12" EP's across the course of the year. Other than what we have already discussed there is little information as to the identity and background of this mysterious producer and mogul (you may or may not know him) - we'll let the music simply do the talking.

Daylight and the warmth within the glow of a morning are elements which maintain immense value to Gregg Kowalsky. This year marked the release of his first album in some eight long years, an elegant ambient excursion which was widely championed by an array of critics and listeners. Blending the use of analog synths alongside modern day mastering techniques and the use of technology he managed to create a dreamy, ethereal assortment of music which remained as singular and individual as ever.

His music is a result of self exploration and lived experiences in climates far warmer than in which we are writing. Both Miami and Los Angeles have been home for Gregg across the last ten years, perhaps this is why he is able to channel musical expression towards the sun, something those in the UK are often lacking.

Anyway, all social commentary aside he has truly set the bar for the future and "L'Orange, L'Orange" is a beautiful piece of work. We invited Gregg to record a mix as part of our Monday ambient series as he selects music from the likes of Hiroshi Yoshimura, Harold Budd and many more.
