Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show -10 March 2002

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to do some jumping, we’re going to go mad, do some gardening and celebrate Bix’s birthday.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Waffles
A couple of weeks ago I played a record called “Waffles”. Listener Luis in Argentina e-mailed to point out that the Missouri Jazz Band was in the case of “Waffles”, a pseudonym for Adrian Schubert and His Orchestra, and that the vocal was by Irving Kaufman. So, now that we’ve set that record straight, here’s another version of “Waffles”

Waffles – Irving Aaronson and His Commanders / Phil Saxe & Chorus, v.
Chicken and Waffles – Bunny Berigan and His Blue Boys

Segment 2: Jump
March 1 in 1912, Captain Albert Berry of the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, MO made the first parachute jump from a powered airplane. So here in honor of all the skydivers out there, here are a couple of jumping songs.

Jumpin’ Jack – Skeets Tolbert and His Gentlemen of Swing
Jumpin’ Jive – Cab Calloway and His Orchestra

Segment 3: Topic
March 1 marked the birth in New York in 1922 of William M. Gaines. That name will be immediately recognizable to some of you. For the others, William Maxwell Gaines was the publisher of Mad Magazine. So here in honor of William M. Gaines and Mad Magazine, are some “Mad” songs.

Harlem Madness – Coon-Sanders Orchestra / Joe Sanders, v.
Sweet Madness – The Casa Loma Orchestra / Kenny Sargent, v.

Continuing this mad set of songs, here’s a pair of acoustic recordings
Pleasure Mad – Charles Creath’s Jazz-O-Maniacs
Charleston Mad – Lovie Austin and Her Blues Serenaders

Segment 4: Flowers & Gardening
March 7 marked the birth in 1849 in Lancaster, Massachusetts of horticulturist Luther Burbank. During his career, Burbank introduced more than 800 new varieties of plants — including over 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, and hundreds of ornamental flowers. So here in honor of Luther Burbank, are some songs about flowers and gardening,

Fleur d’amour – Abe Lyman’s California Orchestra
You’ve Got Me Picking Petals off of daisies – High Hatters
Green Tulips – Vintage Radio Celebrities
Lou – The California Poppies

Segment 5: Bix Beiderbecke
March 10, 1903 is the birthday of……..that’s right! Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke, and here are 3 from Bix

I’m Glad – The Sioux City Six
My Pretty Girl
Sunny Disposish – The Jean Goldkette Orchestra
