Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to celebrate the birthdays of John Luther Jones and Percival Lowell. And March 17 being St. Patrick’s Day, we’ll have some “green” songs.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Ears
March 13 in 1877, Chester Greenwood received a patent for the earmuff. So hear in honor of Chester Greenwood and his earmuffs are some songs about ears.

An Ear Full of Music – Mal Hallet AHO
Cheerful Little Earful – Vincent Lopez AHO / Jack Parke, v.

Tin Ear – Jan Garber and His Orchestra
Were Your Ears Burning Baby – Ruth Etting

Segment 2: Stars
March 13 marked the birth in 1855 of Percival Lowell. The last eight years of his life were devoted to searching for a planet beyond Neptune. Lowell died on November 12, 1916, but the search continued and on Percival Lowell’s birthday, March 13, in 1930, it was announced that the planet Pluto had been discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. Well I don’t have any records about planets, but I have a ton of them about stars.

Bright Star Blues – Piron’s New Orleans Orchestra
Counting the Stars Alone – California Ramblers
Singing to the Stars – Leo Reisman and His Orchestra / Lew Conrad, v.
I’ve Told Every Little Star – Hyam Greenbaum

Segment 3: Railway
March 14 marked the birth in 1864 in southeast Missouri of John Luther Jones. Who’s John Luther Jones? You may know him as “Casey Jones”, railroad engineer and subject of the ballad of Casey Jones. Here’s a version of “Casey Jones” and a few other railway songs.

Casey Jones – Billy Murray and the America Quartet
Big Railroad Blues – Cannon’s Jug Stompers
Flag That Train – Vick Myers and his Atlanta Melody Artists
The Runaway Train – Vernon Dalhart

Segment 4: Green
March 17 is of course, St. Patrick’s Day. So here in honor of St. Patrick’s Day are some “green” songs.

In Your Green Hat – Volunteer Firemen / Al Bernard, Frank Kamplain, v.
There’s a Little White House on a Little Green Hill – Jean Goldkette’s Book-Cadillac Orchestra
