Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 20 January 2008

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthday of Harry Reser, listen to this past week in recording history, and have some songs about…well, stay tuned and find out.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Harry Reser
January 17 marked the birth in 1896 in Piqua, Ohio of one of the greatest banjo players of all time, Harry Reser.

Down Among The Sugar Cane – The Jazz Pilots (Harry Reser) / Tom Stacks, v.
Etiquette Blues – Six Jumping Jacks
Come On, Baby – Cliquot Club Eskimos / Tom Stacks, v.

Segment 2: I’d Rather
There’s nothing I’d rather be doing right now, but this show, and I hope there’s nothing you’d rather be doing than listening, but here’s a few people who’d rather be doing a range of things:

I’d Rather Lead A Band – Richard Himber
I’d Rather Call You Baby – Fats Waller and His Rhythm
I’d Rather Be Alone – Original Indiana Five

Segment 3: Heart’s Song
Last week I had a routine check up with my cardiologist and although I didn’t plan it that way, while I was in seeing him, I passed exactly six years to the minute since the little episode with my heart. So, here’s a set of cardiac songs,

Pop Goes Your Heart – Ted Lewis and His Band / Ted Lewis, v.
My Heart Stood Still – George Olsen and His Music / Bob Borger, Fran Frey, Bob Rice, v.
My Heart’s At Ease – Chick Bullock

Segment 4: Eskimos
In the first segment of the show we heard from Harry Reser’s Cliquot Club Eskimos, which got me to searching, and– OK, you’re way ahead of me–sure enough, here’s a set of rapidly rotating records not BY eskimos, but ABOUT eskimos.

Eskimo Rag – Billy Murray
The Eskimo Song – Charles Fulcher AHO
Don’t Be Like An Eskimo – Joe Haymes AHO

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History

Piano Madness – Harry Roy AHO (January 15, 1936)
The Drag – Alabama Red Peppers
(January 20, 1928)
My Sighing Siamese – Jimmie Elkins and His Wintergarden Orch / Unidentified v.
(January 18, 1928)
Swanee – Louisiana Rhythm Kings
(January 20,1930)
