On this evening’s show, we’ll bemoan April 15, take a midnight ride, and celebrate the birthday of Thornton Wilder.

Segment 1: Cigarettes & Smoking
April 17 in 1933, former hotel bellhop Johnny Roventini, pillbox hat and all, uttered the words, “Call for Philip Morris” for the first time on radio. The phrase “Call for Philip Morris” became one of the most famous in all of advertising. So here to commemorate Johnny Roventini, are some songs about cigarettes and smoking.

April 18 in 1775 at about 10 P.M., three men took to their horses to ride from Boston to Concord, MA to warn the citizens of the approaching British army. So here, in honor of their midnight ride, are some songs about midnight.

Segment 4: Towns
April 17 marked the birth in 1897 in Madison, Wisconsin of novelist and playwright Thornton Wilder. He won 3 Pulitzer Prizes including for his play “Our Town”. So here to commemorate Thornton Wilder, are some songs about towns, starting off, of course, with one about OUR town, Avalon.
