Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 22 July 2001

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going do some dreaming, but try to keep from getting off course, we’re going to celebrate the “happiest place on earth”, and celebrate a giant hot dog.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Dreams
July 16 in 1934, the NBC Red radio network premiered the musical drama, “Dreams Come True”. It was a show about baritone singer Barry McKinley and his novelist sweetheart. So here are some songs about dreams.

When My Dreams Come True – Hal Kemp AHO
I’ve Got a Pocketful of Dreams – Dick Jurgen AHO / Eddy Howard, v.
If Dreams Come True – Chick Webb’s Savoy Orchestra
Why Don’t My Dreams Come True – Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra / Joe Sanders, Carleton Coon, v.

Segment 2: Lost and Found
July 17 in 1938, Douglas Corrigan, an unemployed airplane mechanic, filed a flight plan for Los Angeles, California and took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York. 28 hours later he landed his 1929 Curtiss not in California, but in Baldonnel, near Dublin, Ireland. Douglas Corrigan played himself in the 1938 movie “The Flying Irishman”. So here’s a set of songs in commemoration of “Wrong Way Corrigan”.

Finding the long way home – Ben Pollack and His Park Central Orchestra / Scrappy Lambert, v.
Show me the way to go home – California Ramblers / Billy Jones, v.
Fly Away to Ioway – Ted Fiorito AHO / The Debutantes, v.
Down My Way – Jelly Roll Morton and His Orchestra

Segment 3: Happy
July 17 in 1955, Walt Disney opened the gates to “The Happiest Place on Earth”, Disneyland, in Anaheim, California. I’m proud to say that my father did the aerial photography for the construction of not only Disneyland, but also for Knott’s Berry Farm. So here to celebrate the happiest place on earth are some hap, hap, happy songs.

It’s a Hap-Hap-Happy Day – Bob Zurke and His Delta Rhythm Band
Happy Rhythm – Elmer Snowden and the Musical Stevedores
Anything to Make You Happy – Allynn’s Music Masters
Happy – Slim Lamar and His Southerners

Segment 4: Weiners
July 18 in 1936 The first Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolled out. The idea of a 13 foot hot dog on wheels was the brainchild of Carl G. Mayer, nephew of the founder of the Oscar Mayer Company. The weinermobile carried the world’s smallest chef, Little Oscar, around the streets of Chicago, promoting the company’s “German Style Weiners”. Right now there are 6 weinermobiles on the road somewhere in the world. So here, to commemorate the weinermobile, are some songs about…….weiners.

A Hot Dog a Blanket and You – Gene Kardos AHO
Hot Mustard – Fletcher Henderson AHO
Sam the Hot Dog Man – Lil Johnson
