Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 29 December 2002

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to celebrate a couple of birthdays, and have some songs for the New Year.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Harry Warren
December 24, Christmas Eve marked the birth in 1893 of Salvatore Anthony Guaragna. You may recognize him by the name Harry Warren, but even if you don’t, you most certainly will recognize his songs. Harry Warren is a member of the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Here’s the first of two sets of songs by Harry Warren.

I Love My Baby, My Baby Loves Me – New Prince’s Toronto Band
Where the Shy Little Violets Grow – H. Oreste and His Queensland Orch
You’re Getting to be a habit with me –
Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadian / Bing Crosby

Segment 2: Nat Shilkret
Christmas Day marked the birth in 1889 in Queens, New York of Nathaniel Shilkret.

The Kinkajou – Nat Shilkret and His Victor Orchestra/Billy Murray, v.
That’s My Weakness Now – Nat Shilkret and His Victor Orchestra / Frank Marvin, v.
he Doll Dace – Nat Shilkret and His Victor Orchestra

Segment 3: More Harry Warren

Keep Young and Beautiful
September in the Rain – Geraldo and His Orchestra
With Plenty of Money and You – Frank Dalley Orchestra / Ann Lee Davies, v.

Segment 4: Nat Shilkret & Friends
I promised another set by Nat Shilkret, and here it is

Who? You. That’s Who – Nat Shilkret and The Victor Orchestra / Don Ward
My Melancholy Baby – Nat Shilkret and The Victor Orchestra / Gene Austin
Me and My Shadow – Nat Shilkret and The Victor Orchestra / Johnny Marvin, v.

Segment 5: Happy New Year
This is the last Rapidly Rotating Records show of 2002. So here’s a set of songs to help usher in the New Year. Listen closely to the second record in this set. It’s just short of a hundred years old, and is more a sound painting than a song.

Let’s Start the New Year off Right – Bob Crosby AHO / Bing Crosby, v.
New Years at Old Trinity – Haydn Quartet

Segment 6: A Toast
Until next time, this is Glenn Robison, thanking you for your very kind attention and wishing you a safe, healthy, happy and exceedingly prosperous New Year.

Let’s Drink a Drink to the Future – Ben Selvin AHO
