Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 31 March 2002

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’re going to raise the roof, we’ll be serving some cake and fulfill a request.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Nimiety
To get us started, as a public service, we’re going to have a vocabulary lesson. The word is nimiety, a noun meaning an excess or redundancy. Well, you can never have too many 78s from the 20s and 30s, but I guess you can have too many eyes.

There’s too many eyes – Ted Weems
Too Many Tears – Ed Kirkeby

Too Many Kisses in the Summer – Calif Ramblers
Too Many Tots Make You Totter – Jay Whidden

Segment 2: Roofs
Last week on March 24 in 1955, Tennessee Williams’ play, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, opened on Broadway. So here in commemoration of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” are some songs about roofs.

Tin Roof Blues – New Orleans Rhythm Kings
Leaky Roof Blues – Lange-McKay Orchestra
On a Roof in Manhattan – Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians / Nelson Keller, Stuart Churchill, Clare Hanlon, v.
Steel Roof – The Six Blue Chips

Segment 3: Banana’s
Listener Jorge sent in a request for “Yes, We Have No Bananas”. Here at Rapidly Rotating Records, we try to go above and beyond the expected, so here is not just “Yes, We Have No Bananas”, but a whole set of banana songs.

Yes, We Have No Bananas – Ben Selvin
I’ve Never Seen a Straight Banana – Waring’s Pennsylvanians

I’ve Got the ‘Yes, We Have No Bananas’ Blues – Belle Baker
Banana Oil – Vaughn DeLeath

Segment 4: Cake & Pie
March 26 marked the birth in 1880 of Duncan Hines, a traveling salesman, who would eat in a great many restaurants of varying degrees of quality. He started writing restaurant reviews, hotel and lodging reviews, and recipes, many for his favorite food, baked goods. So here in honor of Duncan Hines are some songs about cake, as well as pie.

I Like Pie, I Like Cake (But I Like You best of all) – Bernie Cummins
Let ’em Eat Cake – Emile Coleman’s Riviera Orch

Sweetie Pie – Fats Waller and His Rhythm
Ma, I miss your apple pie – The Jesters
